that of Mr. W. Waugh Lauder in Meharry hull last evening. It was a sermon on music which was ennobling. interesting anti enlighten ing and it was a great misfortune to our citizens that a large audience was not present. Mr. Lauder is a gentlemen of broad views, and has an education that shows lia-d earnest work from boyhood. There is none of the elfeminate look, and there is in Mr. Lauder an absence of that atleetation that so many misguided musicians carry ns a stock of trade. He on the contrary is possessed of a strong physique, a pleasant face and an earnestness that impresses his audience with the honesty of his purpose and belief. The speaker told of the en nohling influence of music, compare i it to other sciences and made it the greatest of all. He showed the dilficulties of a Bach fugue to be prodiguous and then gave the same a brilliant interpretation on the piano. In speaking of the religious influence of music Mr. Lauder quoted the pope in saying: “Take away Luthers songs and I would not care a snap for his ser mons.” The speaker dwelled on the point that music brought out the best unture of man and led him
