A list of facts concerning many authors, will he given each guest and the object is to give the name of each author from the descripton given. The two receptions were largely attended and the guests apeak of them in high terms.

John Hart and Phillip Shepard,of Indianapolis, are visiting friends here. Miss Mattie Chamberlain, of Cloverdale, is visiting her uncle, T. M. Cline. G. W. Black received a car load of Illinois horses from Areola last night. County Superintendent Lyon is visiting the schools at Keelsville today. Tim Murphy, of Terre Haute, who lias been visiting home folks, returned home today. The Mary Reed Mission band will meet with Mrs. Bayne at three o’clock Saturday afternoon. A. B. Steele writes from I'aola, Kansas, that she and her husband will be at home in this city by Dec. 20. Jas. T. Denny, assignee of Coffman’s grocery, has sold the stock to Lawrence Allen, who will conduct the business. Rev. and Mrs. E. Laughlin, of Cleveland, Ohio, who have been in the city this week packing their household goods, left this afternoon for Cleveland, Ohio. It is stated that Train 20. on the Vandalia, continues to be the best paying train run over the road, which ha* Iieen the case for three years. Train 5, leaving in the morning, lias taken the second place as a paying train. Mrs. M. J. Beckett and J. R. Milh r gave a delightful afternoon reception yesterday from three to six o’clock at the home of the former. 1002 south College Ayenue. Over one hundred invitations were issued, most of which were responded to in person. The guests were received at the door by Misses Ruth Baker and Flossie Kelley. The spacious parlors were darkened and the rays from the incandescent lamps gave a splendor to the scene that was beautiful to behold. Mesdames Beckett and Miller were assisted in entertaining by the following ladies: Mesdames Case, Stephenson, DeMotte, Ogg, Smith, Renick, Tucker and Misses Donnobue, Ames, Grace Birch, Marie Chaffee, Olive Miller and Helen Birch. Smythe has a bright, new, crisp five dollar bill which was received yesterday for the doll show to be given by the Presbyterian church. The fiver is highly prized by the ladies, who are managing the entertainment, in addition to its intrinsic value, from the additional fact that it came from President Grover Cleveland. The ladies wrote to Mrs. Cleveland at Washington asking her to contribute a doll to the exhibition. Yes terday an answer came from Mr. Cleveland, who wrote a pleasant note in his own handwriting, in which he stated that Mrs. Cleve land would not be able to contribute a dull but she enclosed the bill as u contribution to the cause. The la dies are proud of their bill and should place it in the doll exbibi lion so the visitors can see it.

R. S. Oliver’* Patent. The Scientijlc American of No vember 23, says of a T tnam county patent, anti illustrates the article with cuts: A METALLIC RAILWAY TIE. This tie is of trough-like form, and is designed to be made of steel or wrought iron, thus being strong while comparatively light in weight, the tie to be tilled with bioken stone or other ballast to firmly anchor it in place. It has been patented by Royal S. Oliver, of Fillmore, Ind. Fig. 1 is an end view of the tie, Figa. 2 and 3 being transverse sections through the tie and its railsupporting device*. Near each end of the tie are notche* where the metal is turned inwardly to form supports for a chair or rail seat, at whose opposite ends are depending lugs embracing the outer sides of the flanges of tbe tie. To secure the rail to its seat, clamping plates are employed whose inturned lower edges engage the under sidee of the Inturned edge portions of the side<i of the tie, the clamping plates being held in place by a bolt extending across the space below the seat or chair and between the shoulders of tbe tie.
