The lirst joint meeting of the Amphiction and Independent Literary societies was held Saturday night in the Independent ball. In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was an attendance of fifty-five and a most enjoyable evening was spent in a literary and . social way. Mr. Cox, of Indianapolis, was the guest of Mis. blanche Walton yesterday. Mr. Barnes who is physical director of the Y. M. C. A. at Terre Haute, is the guest of Homer Tally at the Phi Psi house, Mort Dial spent Sunday visiting relatives in Terre Haute. Mr. Philbrick, of I. U., is visiting university friends. Butler itauly Beaten. A score of 16 to 0 in favor of DePauw tells the story of the DePauwButler game. The game was called at 3 p. m. For a long time the route seemed to be a close one but after our boys became acquainted with the character of Indianapolis soil things changed and after a few rushes through the line a touch down was made but a few minutes before the close of the first half. The second half of the game was only a repetition of the playing of the latter part of the lirst half. The game was almost altogether a line bucking one on account of the slippery condition of the grounds. At no time was there a probability of Butler scoring. Our line men were simply invincible and the backs distinguished themselves by their fine tackling. From start to gnish tile game was a very fair one in every particular. Not a decision was disputed ; not a blow was struck and not a harsh word uttered, The Butler team treated our team and visitors with the greatest hospi tality. Every member of the team played an excellent game. Coackers Wade and Flint ofiictated admirably and to the satisfaction of all. Cajitain Sandy’s generalship had much to do with the score of the
game.
Too much credit cannot be given Coaeher Wade for the victory. The excellent team work and the good interference and the snap with which the boys played are all due to his coaching. A large number of Indianapolis alumni were on the field shouting for the Gold. MUSIC AND AKT NOTES. String orchestra this evening at

Miss Rowley will give a recital next week, subject, “The Sonata and its Development.” China is fired every Monday at the art school. Persons in town wishing to have firing done must send in the articles by Saturday evening. Notwithstanding the rain and the excursion to Indianapolis there was a good meeting of the choral society on Saturday evening. The music and art schools like the other schools of the university, will have the three days of the thanksgiving recess. The buildings will be open however, for individual work. Miss Matern has sent several •ieces of work to Cleveland for the exhibit by the water color artists, which will open December 4. She is a member of the society.
