At a meeting of the Athletic hoard last night Arthur Hamrick

-

was elected assistant foot ball man ; ager. Action was taken to the efJ feet that no person was allowed to wear a capital “D” on themselves except those who had participated in a collegiate or intercollegiate ' game of foot ball or base ball, or | won a point in intercollegiate Held J day contest. The board expects to ! have the ‘ D” trade marked so that i it can legally giro the participants in the games and them only, the rights to wear it. The committee on subscription for the park fund made a very encouraging report. Hayes and Poynter were elected managers of the gymnasium and track athletics. The foot ball men came out better yesterday and they did good practice. We must win the I. U. game next Monday and that means that we have hard practice today and tomorrow. Practice this afternoon is being held at the new athletic park. John S. Hoagland of Terre Haute, led in the revival meeting last evening. The Noblesville foot ball team which came very near defeating Wabash was beaten by the State university eleven by the score of J8 to 0. The Noblesville Ledger thus comments on the I. U. team which is to play here on Monday: ‘‘The game of foot ball between Nobies- | ville and the State university eleven at Bloomington, Wednesday afternoon resulted in the defeat of the locals by the score of J8 to 0. The story of the contest is told in a few words and details are unnecessary. The defeated team was simply out classed at all points. They hadn’t the least chance of winning from the start, so formidable a front did the Indiana university hoys put up.” There was some talk this morning of holding school on Saturday and dismissing on Monday in order to give everyone an opportunity to go to Greencastlc and see our eleven defeat the DePauw team. A special train will probably be required and is sure to be crowded. —Bloomington Telephone. At the meeting of the Athletic board last evening it was decided to name the new athletic park the “McKeen athletic park.” H. L. Davis, ’94 of Lafayette, is visiting Phi Delt brothers and friends. Don’t miss the lecture this evening. Tickets for the Voorhees lecture will be on sale at Langdon’s at ten o’clock Saturday morning. Joe Allen gave a party to a num ber of his friends last night. Mr. Stiner. formerly of ’99, has entered school. The members of the D. K. E. were out serenading last evening. A lew Thetas gave a taffy pulling at the Durnall house Hallowe'en. This morning after chapel the students and faculty responded veiy liberally to a call for friends for the new athletic park fence. Dr. Stephenson and a number of stuj dents are at w,,rk on the fence this j afternoon. Everyone is showing i great interest in the park and the fence will be completed with but iittle expense to the athletic association. Mr. Dan Pyle and Albert Summers both of the class of 1900 are pledged Delta U’s. The Alpha Phis gave Hallowe’en party at the Harris house last night. Dr. Gobin will preacli Saturday evening and Sunday morning at Cartersbujg. The Phi Psis gave a Hallowe'en pirty at their house last night. The rooms were decorated imitating

a scene in the woods. The evening was pleasantly spent in telling ghost stories, singing etc. Considerable mischief was done last night by some one. A large tree was found on the front porch ol the Darnall house. Messrs. Wolf, Cooper, Howe, Greenman and Paul and Rodger Burlingame and Mis»es Goodwin, Mahan, Sehwin Townsley, Harding, Mitchell, Stanfield anil Ethel Campbell took supper at Mt. Meridian last evening.

StaK*" Fright In I’uhllc Speaking. There are some speakers who never experience the least bit of trepidation before an audience, but from what 1 can learn this is the exceptieu rather than the rule. A gentleman who has charmed many a Vermont audience by his mellifluous words informed me that he was frightened for the first time in his life while speaking after the witty and brilliant Depew at the recent banquet in Burlington. This is not to be woudered at, and I noticed that even the ready and self possessed toastmaster appeared at his best after the ebief orator had left the hall. One of the best known governors that the Ureen Mountain State has had iu recent years told me recently that it bothered him somewhat to think that he could never get over being embarrassed when he addressed an audience. When he wont outside the state to speak, ho said that he was more at ease, being iu the presence of strangers, but when be appeared before au assemblage of Vermonters many of whom he knew, and who knew him, iie spoke not without considerable trepidation. His experience in this direction led him at one time to congratulate ex-Seuator George F. Edmunds on the fact that the latter bad appeared in publio so much that he was perfectly at home when addressing an audienoe, but the congratulator was astonished to hear Mr. Edmunds’ reply: ‘‘You are mistaken. I never rise to my feet to speak without feeling more or less uncomfortable.”—Burlington Free

M»k» » Timely Kald. Golden, Ills., Nov. 1.—Just at the moment yesterday when the earth was rumbling and affrighted citizens of this place were endeavoring to maintain their positions iu bed, swayed by the earthquake, enterprising burglars applied the match to a fuse and blew open a safe in a general store here, thus profiting by the general noise and confusion. Several persons heard the muffled sound of the explosion, but attributed it to the earthquake.

Were we eloquent as angels, yet we should please some people more by listening than by talking.—Colton. Out of 226,000farms in Denmark only 1,900 are more than 250 acres in extent.
