This week twenty-one discharged. It is given out that this rule Is to be strictly enforced on both the eastern and western systems. There is a bad break in the side walk on north Vine staeet at the intersection of the alley running in the rear of the post office. The bricks are out of the walk nearly the entire width and more than one person has stumbled over the obstruction. Th» walk is bad enough in daytime but at night, owing to the great darkness at that point it is a constant menace to life and limb. It should be repaired at once. Every business man can become successful by proper advertising. It never yet failed an experienced master. Given a good merchant who keeps fair goods at fair prices, who misrepresents nothing and treats his customers fairly, who has daily space in a bright newspaper of approved circulation, and who has the knowledge and experience to use that space, there is .lothing that can prevent him increasing his business up to the possible limit imposed by territorial conditions. On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the home of Mrs. Berry Conkwright. of Brick Chapel, was suddenly taken possession of by a company of friends, who notified her that it was the occasion of her 50th birthday. They proceeded to spread an abundant dinner, which more than satisfied thirty-five guests. The day was spent in conversation ami agreeable pastime and everybody reported an elegant time and left wishing Mrs. Conkwright the speedy recovery of tier health. Yesterday afternoon from two to five o’clock Mrs. Geo. W. Grubb and daughter. Miss K.stella, weie at home to a large number of friends at 007 north Jackson street. Mrs. Grubb and Miss Grubb were assisted in entertaining by Mesdames James Allen and G. M. Black, James Handel, John Cross and Misses JessieNeff, Elizabeth Overstreet, Mary and Agnes Bicknell, and Miss Jessie Watson of Terre Haute. The event was one of the most charming of the season. In the evening from eight until eleven o’clock Miss Grubb entertained about one hundred of her friends in a delightful manner. Decorations of palms, carnations, roses and potted plants were used with a pleasing effect. The favors were quite unique* being a hollow peanut shell with n quotation enclosed. Each quotation was the fortune intended for the recipient. Those assisting Miss Grubb in entertaining were; Mrs. Janies T. Allen hiuI Mrs. Banger Williamson and Misses Emma Jones, Kate Hammond, Clara and Tillie Meltzer, Ida Cullen, Elisa | belli Overstreet, Ida Hlbbitt, Cora Darnell, Nellie Hammond, Emma Beckwith, Hadde Dnggy and Jessie Watson. The two events are highly spoken of by those attending, and thev add another to the long list of social entertainments of 1895.
