The city school trustees and county superintendent have done a wise tiling in having the eyes of the school children examined. The parents of children appreciate it and are sending their children to Dr. Shipley's office to have their eyes examined. Yesterday was the first day of the examination and fourteen children had their eyes examined. Their ages were from eight to fifteen years and Dr. Shipley found six out of fourteen with defective vision. Tlte above seems to be a very large per cent and yet in Germany, France and in some other countries the per cent is much larger than tiiis running as biglt as fifty and even sixty percent. Parents sometimes wonder why their cltilddren do not learn faster, and when they know the above results they need not wonder. Some parents do not seem to understand what the examination means. It should lie distinctly understood that there is no expense and that they are not compelled to buy glasses for their children. In fact spectacles | are not mentioned, and parents are not compelled to even have t lie eyes of their children examined, but we are sure that no parent will fall to take advantage of this opportunity to,know whether or not their child lias defective vision. Some have asked “what is tne object of this examination?” The object of tills first, if a teacher knows the condition of tlie eyes of her pupil she will know better how to deal witli that pupil. Second, the parents will know if tiie child’s eyes are correct, and if not, can have them corrected if they wish to. Third, for scientific purposes, to determine whether ar not optical defects increase with advanced civilization. We think Mutt the matter is now made
