“The man of tne standing ad.” says the Somerville, Mass., Citizen, “is the backbone of the newspaper and the solid man of the community. In summer or winter, in sun shine or rain, his name greets tile public with each issue of the paper and people come in time to regard him as well established in a sue cessful business, whether they have been his patrons or not. “Nothing j succeeds like success,” and the pub- | lie, once getting tlie idea that a j man is doing well, stands ever I ready to patronize him and turn to him naturally when they happen to want anything in his line. In this simple fact lies the whole secret of persistent advertising.

Telephones. COUNTING ROOM editorial room

62 9S

The city council sltould order out the entire telephone business if it isn’t adjusted by next council night. Greencastle people are patient but they do not propose to stand such a lot of foolishness and annoyance as they are compelled to submit to. There is no charter in force now in the city for telephones, and the people have some rights that should be respected. There is plenty of capital here that will put in a system if it is given a chance.

The corn exportation of the next five or six months is expected to touch the highest figures ever reached. All the corn that is wanted abroad can be spared out of the great crop now being harvested. Probably the acreage of 189C) will be still greater than that

country. Millions of dollars have been wisely and judiciously expended in bringing up the road bed to its present state of perfection. On the heaviest and best quality of ties every mile of track has been relaid with ninety pounds to tlie yard first quality steel rails. A better and safer track can not be found in this state. In response to the public demand for rapid transit this up to date management lias inaugurated a new fast train service. The special featureof tlie new time card effective next Sun day, Oct. 20, will be the “Monon Flyer,” a new finely equipped train for accommodation of through business. The new train will leave Chicago at 10:1.") a. in . Lafayette 1:40 p. m., Crawfordsville 2:28, Greencastle 3:09, Bloomington 4:10, arriving at Louisville 7 p. m. The returning train will leave Louisville at 7 :3f5 a. m., Bloomington 11 :05. Greencastle 12:09 p. m., Crawfordsville 12:56, Lafayette 1:45, arriving at Chicago at 6:30 p. m. This will be the fastest long j distance train passing tlirough I Indiana. All other passenger | trains will run on much tlie saute time as present. The new curd | will be published Saturday. The ! present management of the Motion j has by fair and honorable treat I ment of its patrons inspired conti- | donee all along the line. Long live

Constable W«*bNt«r Swoop* Down and Take* Char|t« of the'Switch Hoard. Just as Greencastle was begin ning to lean on its telephone system and to learn that it is well nigh indispensable when it is once in running order, the thing closed up like a clam last evening and many a subscriber who had paid his good cash in advance for a month’s service put up the receiver of his in strument after several calls of hello, finally being tempted in his disgust to leave the “o” off the familiar call. The result was reached after a stormy period of ifs, ands,

wherefores.

A complete history of the tele phone business of Greencastle since the franchise was granted would fill a book. In conversation with Mr. Nelson of the Greencastle Local Telephone company last evening he said that his company had done all in their power to give the citizens of Greencastle a system but tha: the construction company had failed to fill their contract both a.to time and to the letter; that they had instead of sending instruments here where they had been originally shipped had sent them to complete other systems they were building, greatly delaying the work here; that Messrs. Nelson and Johnson had gone to Indianapolis and pur chased a switchboard .ind one him dred instruments in ordei ;d facili tale matters, these hping now left on their hands, and had tried in other ways to hurry the matter along, but were unable to get a sat isfaetory completion of the plant. The subscribers were surprised last week by being called upon by the manager of the construction company in charge and being asked for their rentals in advance for one month. Some of them paid the hilis but some did not and scale they do not propose to pay until they have had a month’s service dav and night. Constable Webster’s attachment issued from Esquire Ashton’s court is for a total of about $175 indebtedness including costs. The amounts embodied are as follows: Win. A Stul.z, of the Commercial hotelj$53.55; G. B. and John W. Cooper $17; J. B. Nelson $<)5.02; 1). W. Riggs $2; Ewing McLean $16.60. Sinfth Matson is attorney for the complainants. There is a variety of opinions being expressed and the subscribers who have paid for the present i month’s service are especially loud iu their complaints. The public is getting the worst of the deal and it is time to call a halt. Attorneys say that tlie exchange can he run witli the attachment pending but Esquire Ashton says lie has no power to appoint a receiver, and

25 as tile date for try

ing tile eases. Manager Daniel for the I’heomx National Telephone and Construction company, wired ins company at Indianapolis last night ot the attachment and the managers are expected today. Manager Daniel stated to a reporter that lie had collected on rentals $37, and that lie would do anything he could to run the exchange until the matter is adjusted. He will try to get the company to give a bond, so the people can get the service they are entitled to. Mr. Daniel further said be would go to Indianapolis and see what

the company would do.
