continent exposition in the year 1900 as a centennial celebration of the organization of Indiana as a territory of the United States, embracing at that time all of the northwest beyond Ohio. The terri < tory was born Julj' 4, 1800, and Gen. W. II. Harrison, the future President, was its Governor for the next eleven years. The State was admitted in 1816. Indiana may well take steps to advertise itself more vigorously. In spite of its quiet ways, it is sixth among American common-wealths in population, and the elements that have made it great ought to be better known to the world.
Announcement. The little queen of comedy, Cecil Spooner, surrounded by an excellent company will be at the opera house Saturday night. This season she has surrounded herself with an excellent company of artists. The Lawrence Journal says: Last night something new was given a Lawrence crowd in the kaleidescope dance by Cecil Spooner. Between the third and tourth acts the lithe some little mite, with nymph like activity and the grace of a gazelle, entwined about her bonny form the immeasurable tolds of silken text ure. and as the music swells, comes from her graceful inactivity to the entrancing motions that hold in breathless appreciation the whole array of admirers that are spellbound by her almost magic movements. From one dainty, rounded terpischorean figure to another just as full of natural ease and beauty

In 1891 everything was going the democratic way, and it was easy to see that a democratic victorv in 1892 was inevitable. On the eve of the election of 1896 the drift is in the other direction very de I oidedly. This means that the result a year hence will he something ditferent from what it was three years ago.

the wonderful danee proceeds, under the enveloping rays of the everchanging lantern, till the passing of the sprite that seems to be in lovely action before the crowd, calls them to their senses and brings round after round of applause. This is repeated after ever varying dance and figure, with colors most bril liant and with cleverness most fascinating, again and again, and when the danee is over there is no power of description that tells its beauty, and the appreciation of no one is able to rind expression in phrases that do it justice. The kaleidescope dance is something grand and Cecil Spooner makes it so. It.
No Kpirieiiilc’M Hero. Crawforduvllle Journal. All over lnd ; ana typhoid fever is raging and in many of the towns diphtheria is rampant. The State board has no record of all the places where these afflictions pre vail and none of the total number of cases. In some places it has been necessary to close the public schools. Everywhere city and county hoards are earnestly at work to abate the epidemics. The State board is lending its aid and urging subordinate boards to be rigid in enforcing the quarantine rules and thorough in desinfecting. The progress of epidemics is too often due to incomplete disinfection. In many instances, the paper on the walls of rooms where patients have been confined should be torn off and the walls washed with the proper solution. A plan of disin feeling that is commonly followed, is to fumigate with sulphur. The State Board does not think that sulphur fumigates. The Board is also urging that dead victims be given private funerals and defines what a private funeral is. It is not one held at the residence where the public can attend, but one attended only by those absolutely required to be there. It is thought that the cooler weather will aid in suppressing the two afflictions.

The growing disposition among Greencastle merchants to use printer’s ink is most commendable. There is no better advertisement for a city than a well patronized paper published in home interests.
A call has been made for a meeting of the republican state central committee at Indianapolis next Thursday to indicate a time for holding district conventions for the purpose of selecting members of the organization that is to manage the party campaign of 96.
where in Yorkshire, where our Bradford correspondent says, the factories have been running day and night for months past. The Gorman tariff encourages the manufacture of the cheapest class of shoddy goods because the ad valoren duty is reduced to 40 per cent, except goods that are worth above 88 cents per yard. What is known as president cloth can bo sold in New York at 51 cents a yard, plus commission and freight, while under the McKinley tariff similar goods could not be sold for less than $1.38. It is not surprising that, as our English correspondent puts it, “evidence of our freshening trade” is everywhere visible throughout Yorkshire. As for Americans, our sheep growers are practically ruined, our manufacturers of woolen goods fare but little better and the people are being compulsorily educated (?) to the use of shoddy goods. Such are a few of the results of a shoddy
tariff.
