A Short .Session. Quarterlv Salary Night. Claims and Notes. Common council met Tuesday eyming with all on deck. Mr. Handel's face wore a broad smile as he can scent democratic victory farther than any one and was anxiously awaiting the verdict from Indianapolis. The verdict arrived all right, later on. Mayor Birch called all the committees clear down to the claims committee before he got a response, but when it came it came hard as it had the regular quarterly salary allowances for city officers. City Attorney Moore reported that the costs in the Sellers annexcase due from the city to the conn ty would amount to $45.45 thar would be certain, and he would see further as to the rest of the claim. An order will be drawn at next meeting for that amount. They report of the city treasurer for the month of September was referred to the finance committee. Mr. HiIc3 T reported a resolution asking that the owner of the council chamber repaper and refit the room. The motion was dropped and the matter was left with Mayor Birch who will confer with the landlord. There is a squeak on the doorof the chamber that should lie done away with. A drop of oil is all that is needed. The telephone question was up a little and the question of the Plioe nix company charging rentals after October 10 was discussed. No action was taken, however. The following claims were al lowed:

The Holy .Sepulcher. On Tuesday the night of the 22d of October, Senator D. W. Voor bees will deliver in Mebarry ball a lecture entitled the “Holy Sepulcher.” This is a very unique and valuable production. It amounts to an argument in defense of Chris tian ity frt>m the standpoint of one who has had large experience in the study and practice of law. Like many other eminent public men Senator Voorhees has had his doubts and perplexities on the sub Ject of religion. There have been times when he seemed to be very sceptical in regard to the genuine ness and authenticity of the scrip tores and there were other times when the teachings of the Bible seemed to be the only adequate source of consolation and guidance in great, bereavements. This lecture will doubtless create a great impression and will be the means of strengthening the faith in the divinity of Christ of many practical minds not usually influenced by the pulpit. The entire community look forward to this occasion with great interest and it is expected that Meharry hall will be greatly crowded to hear this lect ure. Senator Voorhees is not seek ing to make money out of this lecture. The entire proceeds of the address will be given to the, alumni fund of the university. The Senator is a graduate of the class of ’49. In order to afford an opportunity fir everybody to hear the lecture, the price of admission has been placed at a very low figure. The general admission fee is only 25 cents and reserved seats 35 ets. It will be a credit to Greencastle if on the first deliverance of this lecture, there is a crowded audience to meet the distinguished senator of

The regular meeting of the Put nam county Historical society was held last evening at the G. A. R. hall with a fair attendance. Presi dent J. R M. Allen was absent from the meeting on account of sickness and Mrs. Jonathan Birch presided. The meeting was opened by prayer by’ Hev. Newbouse, which was followed by a well rendered solo, “The Tyrleose and his Son,” by Mrs. Louis Steep, accompanied by Miss Helen Hathaway. Mrs. A. S. Brian read a paper on the early' history of Putnam county. The paper was written by her father Aex. S. Farrow in 1870, and many incidents of the early settlement of Putnam county were given, Mr. Farrow came to this county in 1829. Mrs. Mary L. Allison had prepared a paper upon reminiscences of her life but being unable to be present the [taper was read hy Mrs. Jonathan Birch. Mrs. Allison came to to this county in 1827 and she related many interesting facts about the early days of Putnam. Miss Lillie Ford next sang a well appreciated solo. Mrs. T. C. Hammond read a continuation of her paper on Pioneer Women of Greencastle. She gave a brief sketch of Putnam county ladies born between the years of 1815 and 1*22. The remainder of the meeting was devoted to short talks in which W. H. Hagan and James T. Denny took part. Mr. Ragan gave a brief ta k upon the life and character of Mrs. Naomi Hunter, who died last Saturday at the age of 85 years. He was of the opinion |that Mrs. Hunter had been a resi dent of this county longer than any now living. After a short talk as to the advisability of holding afternoon sessions the meeting adjourned.

TIicoHopliical Lecture.

Theosophy makes great claims, saying that the doctrines of Karma and reincarnation are the only logical basis for ethics. In other words that outside of these teachings there ie no logical way of persuad ing a wrong doer to desist from evil ways. As questions are in order at the close of the lectures, our college professors, ministers and others will have an opportunity of combating this claim. Mr. Bur chain Harding speaks at court house Thursday K p m. on “Rein carnation,” Friday on “Human Perfection.” Admission is free to all. Theosophy being unseetarian is admitted into our public schools, lectures having been given before schools in this state. At present no basis of ethics is taught in public schools, and teachers in many places have welcomed theosophy as
