Th#« Gray Jury Kea<*h that Conrluniun Late Yesterday Keening. "'here has been no conviction of E. E. Gray for arson. The case went to the jury* yesterday afternoon at 1 :40 o’clock and for five hours the twelve men tried to settle upon a verdict. They were about evenly divided at first, standing seven to five for conviction upon the first ballot, hut at the close stood eight for acquittal and four for conviction. They locked horns at this point and could not be shaken. Judge McGregor remained over until the eight o'clock train, and after the jurors had had their supper ha called them in and hearing their determination not to agree, discharged them. The general opinion was that the jury would hang, but several thought there would he a conviction and a number looked for acquittal. The case was a most bitterly fought struggle and there w*ere some remarkable points developed. Just what is to he done in the future is not known, hut it is to be hoped that Portland Mills will settle down now to its usual quietude, as it has been considerably riled since this case began. The Correct Way. No man attempts to do a thousand dollar business in live hundred dollars’ worth of floor .-pace. No man of dolltus and sense would put Wilton carpets on dirty floors, with dirtier walls, and filter his display light through dusty cobwebs. The successful business man gives to every part of his business what every part of it iceds, neither, more nor less. The man of pcoflt h unionizes every part of his business into the harmony of business, so that his business may bring more business. The good man of trade appropriates a certain sum of money every year for advertising, the same as lie sets aside a certain sum for clerk hue, and when he outs expenses he cuts them all over, not in any one particular spot.—Mathaniel Fowler.

How to Make Evertbn Toffee.
Take a pound of molasses, the same quantity of moist sugar and half a pound of butter, put them iu a saucepan largo'enough to allow of fast boiling over a clear fire, put in the butter first and rub it well over the bottom of the saucepan and add the molasses and sugar, stirring together gently with a knife. After it lias boiled for about ten minutes ascertain if it is done by having ready a basin of cold water and drop a little of the mixture into it from the point of a knife. If it is sufflfciently done when you take it from the water, it will bo quite crisp. Now prepare a large, shallow tin pan or dish rubbed all over with butter to prevent its adhering and into this pour the toffee from the saucepan to get it old, when it can
be easily removed.
