HOW TO PROTECT APPLES. The Greatest Enemy to Export Apples Is the CodJling Moth. The entire crop can bo made wormless if the orchards of the United States will use the following recipe; Use puris green at the rate of a pound to 150 gallons of water. Weigh out sufficient portion for the capacity of the tank used and make it into a thin paint with a small quantity of water and add powdered or quicklime equal to the weight of the poison used, mixing thoroughly. The lime takes up the free arsenic and removes the danger of scalding. Strain the mixture into the spray tank, taking care to pulverize and wash all the poison through the strainer. During the operation of spraying see that the liquid is agitated with sufficient frequency to prevent the settling of the poison. Let the first spraying follow within a week after the falling of the blossoms of either apple or pear, and follow this with a second treatment just before the fruit turns down on the stem, or when it is from a quarter to half an inch in diameter. The first spraying reaches the eggs laid by the moth in the flower end of the fruit, shortly after the falling of the blossoms, and the second the later eggs laid by belated moths. Don't spray trees when in bloom, and if a washing rain immediately follows treatment repeat the application. Large Crowd at Terre Haute. Terhe Haute, Sept. 3.—Labor day was celebrated here with a parade in the morning and amusements at the fair ground in the afternoon. Addresses were made by Senator Voorhees and Colonel McLean

What might nave proved a most serious accident occurred on east Main street at the corner of Forest Avenue about 6 o’clock last evening. J. D. Straehan and wife, accompanied by Mrs. Strachan’s sister and her children, were out driving in a surrey when a piece of the harness broke, which fell, striking one of the horses. They began kicking and started to run. Fortunately the single tree broke and the horses tore loose from the surrey, which was stopped by the tongue running into the ground. The team was caught a few blocks east of Main street by Officer Johnson before any damage was done. —Brazil Timex.

Murrehl in Chicago. The Chicago Record of Aug. 31. had pictures of Miss Elthel Sutherlin, formerly of this city and her husband. The paper said : A strain of romance runs through the circumstances that led to the marriage of Samuel T. Bergey and Miss Ethel Sutherlin, which occurred Wednesday at Milwaukee. About two years ago Mr. Bergey was studying under Charles W Clark, the vnealist, at Kimball hall. Frof. Clark’s accompanist was a fair young lady, and while M r. Bergey was being instructed in the act of singing his heart was snared in the silver meshes of mischievous Cupid’s net The acquaintance begun in this manner grew into mutual affection and Mr. Bergey decided that he needed an accompanist through life and Miss Sutherlin shared his opinion. Wednesday morning they went to Milwaukee and were married by the Rev. Mr. Hunsberger. They are now back in Chicago and have taken up their residence at 242 Robey street. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Sutherlin of Greencastle, I ml. She is a graduate of the DePauw School of Music and is studying at the Chicago conservatory Mrs. Bergey’s parents will soon move to Chicago. M r. Bergey is the posses sor of a tine barytone voice. He is still studying at Kimball hall and also acts as instructor. He is 23 years of age and is a son of the Rev. William Bergey of Flint, Mich.
