Millen had had all kinds of trouble which no doubt preyed upon his mind until his min 1 gave way under the strain. He was sick in I e 1 at the time he did the deed, and was being waited on by a | nephew aged thirteen years. He I sent the boy from the room after a grip sack in which was a hi caliber Smith it Wesson revolver. The bov returned and gave him the grip and was then sent from the room after a glass of water. While the lad was gone Mr. McMillen took the revolver out of the grip, and holding it close to his abdomen fired. The ball entered about two inches from the navel and passed out near the back bone. The man lived about fifteen minutes alter he shot himself hut gave no reason for

it.

To those knowing Mr. McMillen they believed him of unsound mind in a mild degree, lie would stay a week or so with diif'Tent families and hud been in failing h uilth for several months. Domestic difficulties added to his irouhles. Several terms ago his wife v as given a divorce from him in the I’utnatn circuit court. This had troubled him and several weeks ago his wife at his request visited him, hut at that time told him it would he the last time she would call. He tried again, it is said, to have her visit him lately hut she would not do it. Mrs. McMillen lias been residing at Terre Haute for about a year and is i-jniiing a boarding house. She visited Fern Sunday with the Jackson club picnic crowd and was within five miles of her husband’s body when the word was brought that he was dead. She was driven to the scene and viewed the remains. ( oroner Kleinbub was called and will hold an inquest. McMillen it will be remembered, purchased several head of cattle one time from

The beds were torn up and the clothing piled up on the floor. The bureau drawers were all out and the contents scattered about the rooms. The silverware and china were not molested. There were no indications of vandalism except what wis necessary in the thieves entering and searching the house for money. About five dollars and a railroad ticket to flreencastle was all the property found missing. Kntrnnce was made by cutting the back screen ami breaking a panel of i>lass in the door, after which the key on the inside could be turned. The door between the kitchen and the front of the house was locked. It was tom from the hinges, which indicates that it boys are responsible, they were large and healthy boys On one dresser were several pins, but they were not taki r. The silverware was in a cupboard m the dining room and could be seen through :i glass door, but the thieves did not even break open the door. Money appeared to be the only object in search. Mis® Lillian Southard and mother were visiting there at the time and it is thought the stolen proj erty belonged to them.

Anderson furnishes more marvelous stories than any other town in the State. Here is one of the latest: A. citizen of that place, owner of a dog, left there some days ago for an outing at a Michigan resort. While at the resort the citizen had occasion to telephone to Anderson, using the long distance line. His dog happened to be on the table at the Anderson end of the line. The receiver was placed to the canine’s ear to test the dog’s ability to recognize the master’s voice. The nruteiminediately recognized the voice, expressing pleasure by wagging its tail, barking ai d gyrations that plainly indicated he knew the master’s voice.

The newspaper men of Brazil trounced the county officials in a base ball game Friday. We believe the Greencastle printers can do the same to the Putnam officials.

The Kentucky republicans have the best ticket and the best platform known in the polities of the state in the last twenty years, and their success becomes more likely every day. Boom that fruit show for Putnam county at the State fair. It will be worth hundreds of dollars if properly managed, and a united effort should be made to get it ready. The time is short.

The chief reliance of the Ohio democrats in the present campaign is said to be the extraordinary coincidence that for the eighteen years beginning with 1877 they have elected the governor and carried the legislature that was to choose a senator once in every six years, and 1895 is another sixth year. But democratic coincidences do not count when the cireum | stances are manifestly republican. How Vaccination Was I Uncovered. When Dr. .Tenner was at Sudbury, ho was surprised one day at hearing a conntry woman say that she would not take the smallpox because she bad had the cowpox, and upon inquiry he learned that it was a popular notion in that district that milkers who had been infected with a peculiar eruption which sometimes occurred on the udder of the cow were completetly secure against the smallpox. It occurred to Jonuer in 1780 that it might bo possible to propagate the cowpox, and with it the security from smallpox, first, from the cow to the human body, and then from one person to another. The experiments and confidence in them were uncertain for a

: year, but after that time success was

assured. Dr. .Tenner worked all his remaining life to benefit mankind and spread the knowledge of his most wonderful discovery, and benefited the human race in every civilized country.

‘‘Yes, I do,” was the reply. ‘‘When Julius Caesar revised the calendar, he named a month after himself, July. The following month was left with its old name, Hextilis, or the sixth month, for that was its number in the Homan calendar. When Augustus becamo emper or, bo thought be had as good a right to have a month named after him as Julius had, so he renamed Sextillis and called it August. At that time Sextillis had but 80 days, while July had 31. Augustus thought his mouth should have as many days as Julius, and one was taken from poor little February to accomplish the object.”’ “I always supposed that something of the sort happened, but my idea was that Augustus had been working so hard one February that he took a day off, and it
