Onk of the democratic boomlets of the season is that of Hon. G. W. Cooper, of Columbus, who will make a shy at the democratic governor nomination.

It is gratifying to learn that the Cubans have won all the important battles so far in their tight for liberty. Matties ol that kind always tickle the fancy of a true American.

Sr. Louts Globe-Democrat: On July 8, 1861, Spain issued a pro clamatiou of neutrality in regard to the American civil war, and acknowledged the Confederates as belligerents. This was before the battle at, Hull Run, and England hud taken the same action two months earlier. If the Cuban insurgents set up a provisional government they need not be backward about claiming belligerent rights.

is one that has worried the daughters of Eve ever since that ancient lady had a daughtt r, and a sure shot formula has never yet been discovered until the one that acci dentally fell into the Putnam county coroner's hand, which was alright, for who ever heard of any-1 tiling coming to a coroner except ! by accident, in fact accidents furnish him salary. Mr. Kleinbub has received three letters from St. Louis, claiming the ownership of tlie body of Win. Newman, whose death on the Vandalia has been mentioned in these columns before. One of them explains the dimple theory. It contained a photograph of rather a handsome young man, with full description and the remark that he hud a dimple in his forhead directly between his eyes, caused by a pistol bullet. There's the secret girls. All you now Lave to do is to get some accommodating young gentleman friend who nas a revolver, to step off about twenty paces, locate the spot where you want the dimple and if he is a good marksman the bullet will do ^ the rest. The bullet dimple will now come in fashion, it is thought. Getting down to the serious part of this Wm. Newman matter there is certainly a mystery on the coroner's hands. He has now in his possession three lettets from St. LouD, each one describing a Wm. Newman, each from a different party and different address, each claiming Newman is missing and two of the writers positively identify the miss'ng man. One Laura Newman writes from :d*2’2 Lucas avenue, and she is the one who sends the photograph, and, incidentally, the dimple recipe. The photograph no more resembles the dead man than it does the coroner. The chief of police at St. Louis, writes that Laura Newman of 1707 Geyer avenue, positively identities the body from its description as one Wm. Newman, who is missing. The other claimant is the one here

as coming from

2(540 Morgan street. Up to date there are thus three Wm. Newmans missing with several of the St. j Louis wards and precincts yet to | hear from. It is possible Holmes visited St. Louis and it is also pos sible that the Wm. Newmans of that town are on a bust or an ex cursion. Coroner Kleinbub has added a stenographer to his force and is now prepared to receive more letters claiming the body of the

dead man.

Another. An exchange exposes a new swindle that lias been successfully' worked in several cities in the northern part of the state. A man, described as being shot! and spare, has been going about the country for several weeks selling “electric liniment." The light nings have been conjured into this pot of sticky stuff and the compound possesses virtue to heal everything from a sprain to a dis location of the spinal cord. That is not all to every purchaser of "electric” liniment is promised a half dozen yards of dress goods. The man who sells the medicine collects for the same with the understanding that the dress goods are to be delivered next week. As the price of the liniment is but nominal, and the sample of the dre°s goods are worth from .i<1.2r> to $1.50 a yard, the whole scheme has been characterized as a fraud and the police are looking for the perpetrator.
