“old Hi” out of G*” at the Terre Haute races Thursday. This is one of a very few instances m which “old Hi” gets the worst of it. Mrs. H. L. Seott and daughter, of Paris, lit., are guests of Miss Laura Aiiiinernian. Last evening a picnic was given in Drew’s woods iu their honor by a number of young people. The Greencastle chapter of the Agassiz association met this afternoon in the biology recitation room and listened to a very interesting paper on “Instinct” by Bennet Allen, after which a lively discussion followed. Dick White, a tireman on the Big Four, on last night's “Knickerbocker” was killed by striking his head against a water stand-pipe as the train was entering Charleston, 111. He was not feeling well and was leaning with his head out of the window of his cab.
Mrs. T. J. KUiott is at home after nn extended visit at Indianapolis. The Mahan mineral spring has been undergoing some decided im provements this week. The old lining of the spring lias been taken out and a large tile put in.

Why Not Come to Putnam. Indianapolis Journal. Rev. Mr. Hinahaw, who is in the Danville jail, charged with the murder of his wife, has retained Henry Spann to defend him. The trial will begin in September at Danville and will be of a most sensational nature. It is not unlikely that a change of venue will be asked, which may possibly bring the trial to this county.

A little article has been going the rounds of the press for a week or two and each paper credits some other town with the ouginal; it is not known whether or not such a society has been organized here but such may be the case. Here is the article and if anyone knows of such a society here, let us know: A number of girls met one evening last week for the purpose of organizing an anti-slang society. A leading society lady way elected president.
