The motorman intended to throw the switch at Twenty-sixth street without stopping his car, but he missel it, and the heavy motor, instead of taking the track ou Twenty-sixth street, turned west to Crown Hill. At the same moment an incoming train loaded with people who had been to Broad Ripple attending the old settlers' meeting was rounding the curve on the other track and the northbound motor struck the rear trailer with fearful force and crushed it like cardboard, the limbs of the unfortunate passengers lieing ground between the jammed seats. Tamacjua, Pa., Aug. 10.—Up to yesterday tht' officials of tlie Lehigh Coal and Navagation company were as much iu doubt as to the extent and location of the fire iu the upper workings of No. 10 colliery at Gearytowu as they were two weeks ago. A line of over 2,000 feet of 0-inch pipe has been laid up the mountain side, and a powerful pump is being placed in position near Panther creek to force water into the burning workings. It may be found necessary to Hood the mine, anil between the tilling and pumping out, it is thought it will be idle for at least two years. No. 10 is one of the most extensive and valuable mines owned by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation company, and its capacity to produce lump coal is unequal to the market demand for it. It employs between 300 and 400 men and boys. The origin of the fire can only be conjectured at this time, but old employes feel positive that it was started about four years ago, when an explosion occurred in the upper workings, and that tho coal and timbers have been burning since that time. However, enough is already known to say that if, will be a costly undertaking for the company to head off the lire, and hundreds of employes, many of whom reside in Tamaqua, are likely to bo thrown out of work for several mouths.
