We read, over the state, that saloonkeepers in this city or that city have held meetings and agreed to obey the law. Who ever before heard of people holding mass meet ings to find out whether they would or would not obey the law. Such actions make one tired. Sal..on Keepers should go about their busi ness and obey the law like other people, without holding a meeting to find out their minds on the subject. In Greencastle they obey it, no meetings of any kind on the subject being necessary.
located can get a club in and out at most any hour, thus keeping down expenses to a minimum. Two good games a week will pay more than expenses and will advertise the city. Put base ball squarely on its feet, instead of having a half-hearted elfort at the sport, and and it will pay its way handsomely. The lileycle Hump. “This protestation against the ‘bicvele hump,’ ” said an old rider to me, “is very funny. As a matter of fact the man who bends over is not ‘humped,’ but the fellow who undertakes to sit up straight is round shouldered. “Watch a rider coining head on,,' he continued, “and you will think the one leaning over the bars is ‘humped,’ while the other class appears straight. But when they pass and you get the rear view you find the back ot the stooped fellow is straight, the bend being at the hips, the shoulders being pushed square by the weight resting on the rider's hands, resting on top of the bar. “The rider who tries to sit straight reaches under the grips and by pulling draws his shoulders together, cramping his chest.” I looked for myself and found the statement of my friend to be true. Look for yourselves: you will be surprised.—Bicycling World. Hsavj Suit for Damaars. A sequel to the Wright divorce suit was filed in the circuit court yesterday. H. H. W'right, who is defendant in a divorce suit, has brought suit for ten thousand dollars damages, making B. F. Barwick defendant. Mr. Barwick is the father of Mrs. Mary Wright, who is asking a divorce from her husband, and Mr. Wright in his subsequent suit for damages alleges that Mr. Barwick has used his fatherly influence upon his daughter, Mrs. Wright, to such an extent and in such a manner that he has alienated her affection for her husband and estranged her from him; that the defendant has forbidden the plaintiff to call at his residence to see his wife and child; that he has persuaded his wife td remain away from him and not to reside with him in a home he has prepared in Illinois, where he now has a good salary. Mr. Wright asks for ten thousand dollars judgment. He is represented by Moore Bros., while S. A. Hays is attorney tor Mr. Barwick.
There is no valid reason why Greencastle fofr the next six weeks should not have base ball and good sport at that. Yesterday’s game set the cranks afire and now there is a clamor for more. This can be had at a small expense. The grounds are in fine shape and Greencastle certainly has the talent. A good catcher can be imported for a few dollars per game, and with Eiteljorg as pitcher, with Bennett and Callahan for a change battery, Greencastle could put up a team that would rank high in the state and bring to the city some of the crack amateur teams of Indiana. Clubs are writing here for dates and Greencastle being so well

LADOGA DEFEATED.
Kail Game Seen Here in \earn— Seore Six to Five. The Ladoga ball club backed up by a lively crowd of rooters came down yesterday acd were defeated by the Greencastle club in as pretty an exhibition of the national game as any one would care to see. Ladoga always puts out a good ball club and when they are short of players at home they hire one or two thus keeping up a stiff team. They confidently expected to win yesterday and all kinds of even money was offered on the result and went begging, but during the day some of the Greencastle people took in odds of three to one offered and profited thereby. Some Greencastle people bet against the home team and are consequently sore. The game opened with Ladoga at the bat and they scored two runs, they were blanked in the second inning but in the third by timely hitting and some bad fielding made three more. This ended their run getting, and for the next six innings they drew a straight string of goose eggs. They had men on bases several times and they got to third all right enough but there they died. For Greencastle the scoring began in the second inning when two runs were made on good hitting and a temporary case of rattles on the part of Ladoga. The third inning was a blank but the home club got one in the fourth and one in the fifth; in the sixth and seventh they were blanked but in the eighth they scored two runs winning the game. The excitement was intense in the eighth, with two men on bases Eiteljorg came to the bat and in response to a universal request from th# spec tators to knock the ball out of sight he complied, sending it over the right fielder’s head up against the fence and saving the runners ahead of him, taking third base himself. The hit was a great one and the Greencastle people who had pulled and rooted for over an hour were in all kinds of ecstacy. Eiteljorg also played a great game in •enter and pulled down a line hit that was labeled for a homer. Bennett pitched for Greencastle and barring some little wildness did great work. He wasn’t in the best of form to start with but settled down later and struck out thirteen men. Rooney Callahan caught a fine game of ball, and has the right stuff in him for a catcher. One of the Ladoga players swung a bat around and disabled the catcher for a few minutes but he pulled up all right. Callahan caught as pretty a game as any one could want and it couldn’t have been b.proved upon. King at short put up a great game catching a fly that set the wheels of the cranks to going. He is in the right place. Matson on third made a sensational catch of a tty in the ninth and batted well. In the field Mize muffed a fly and played a careless game generally. In center Eddie Eiteljorg was a tower of strength and in right Potter attended to everything making one fine catch. The Greencastle boys kindly took to Souders’jjitching, after Faucett had retired. Poor base running and worse coaching cut Greencastle out of two runs, probably three. Lee for Ladoga was dubbed “mud belly” but he played a good game at second. He has a habit of jumping in front of a ball when batting for which he should he called out, it is illegal. Boyatt caught a fine game for Ladoga and threw to second like a rifle shot. The teams were pretty evenly matched and the game was of a quick, snappy, chinchy order that makes the sport so attractive. Give them more of them. The score by innings was: 123455781 llrerncastle 0 v 0 1 1 0 0 2 x—5 l<adoira 20800000 0-4 Karm-d runs—Ladoira, 4; lirwncastle. 4; struck out—by Foster, •; By Ttennett, 13; base hits—IauIorh. 5; (ireeneastle. 5; two base hits —Potter, King: three base hits—Klteljorg, 2: Rrrors—Lailoga, 8; Greencastle. 5; base on balls by Bennett, 4. Only ,400 More Wanted. The Greencastle Manufacturing company have secured four more j subscriptions to their preferred stock list and only lack $1400 to complete it. The following names have been added to the subscrip tion list since the last report published last week: E. A. Hamilton, 1 share; J. Sudranski, 1 share; John Kiley, 1 share; A. B. Hanna, 1 share. The company desire to close the matter by next Tuesday night, at which time they will take steps to begin the erection of their plant. The interest manifested by the workingmen of the city has stimulated the business men to take more stock and it looks at present like th’re would be little difficulty in raising the desired amount. Our people have shown a disposition to pull together in scouting this industry for our city and are to be commended. It shows that when we are united and determined to do a thing we can do it. After this business is made a success, we can pull for something else, and there is no guessing at what the ultimate benefit to the town will be from this kind of work.

DR- HEARNE'S STATEMENT-
bxptM-tn to B® Indicted, but Say* He Will KHtahlidh His Innocence. Special Dispatch to the Globe Democrat. Hannibal, Mo.. July 19.—Prior to his departure for Chicago today Dr. J. C. Hearne thus expressed himself for publication: “It seems that I am being tried for the murder of AmosJ. Stillwell, and I want to say right here that 1 am as innocent of that crime as you are. 1 know nothing about the murder personally, and I can’t see why I am so hounded by tlie newspapers. All tlie newspajien* in the country seem to delight in publishing sensational articles, and yet they take care never to say a favorable word for me. i don't know what Dick Stillwell ar.u my wife knew about the murder of Mr. Stillwell, hut 1 believe my wife is innocent, or else 1 would never have married tier. No sir; I would never have married a murderess. But I am glad this investigation is being made thorough, so that after the trial is over there will no longer be an oditiua resting upon me. 1 feel confident that I will be able to establiKh my innocence should the Grand Jury find an indictment against me.” “Dr. Hearne, do you expect to take any depositions in Hannibal?” “I can’t say positively yet, but think we shall. It will depend upon what line we have to combat I still have friends in Hannibal, and there are any number of people here who do not l>eiieve tiiat i am guilty «f tiiat atrocious crime. After tile people have heard the evidence of tlie other side they may change their sentiments, for so far they have only heard one side of the case and much of the evidence already adduced has been false. On being naked when he expected to return to San Diego. Cal., he said that he did not know ; that lit might remain in Hannibal all tlie summer. But as his libel case is to be tried in California commencing on August ill, it is presumed he will be there at that time. John A. Johnson, a plasterer, has made a statement to the ell'set tiiat lie saw a man and a woman in the yard at at the rear of the Stillwell mansion at 12:30 o’clock on the morning of the mnrtler. A Trilby Somal A number ot well known young ladies in r certain Pennsylvania city have inaugurated a novel plan for social entertaining, known as a Trilby foot party. For being strictly up to date, it excels anything that has yet come to our notice. After mentioning where the party occurred and in whose honor it was given, the following description of the entertainment is given; “The leading feature was the pleasant but difficult feat deie gated to the young gentlemen to perform. The girls were hidden behind a screen, with the exception of their shoeless and stockingless feet, which coyly proti tided beneath tlie curtain. The trick was lor the young men to determine by looking at the pink tipped, bewitching feet which gril was attached to the other end. The two gentlemen guessing correctly the greatest number of pedal extremites were awarded prizes of a Trilby pin and heart.
