Mr*. I>uriiam'n Hurglar*. Muncle Times. What whk suppoBf-tl to be itn «tteuipt to rob druggist J. E. Durliatn’i residence on Jert'ergon street near Charles was made yesterday and Mrs. Durham saw enough to give her an intimation as to how the robbers work. She was upstairs when she heard a rap at her door, but thinking it was a tramp made no response. Several raps followed and finally the man came to another part of the house, but soon left. She heard two men talking, one inquiring if the other was certain that no one was at home. The lady then laid down for a rest and fell asleep. Presently she was awakened and went down stairs to investigate. She found a window screen hoisted and a man sitting near by, probably waitiug for his partner who was to enter the house and plunder it. The lady pushed down the windows and the fellow went over the fence into the alley and escaped. As he left he was careful not to exhibit his face.

The Supreme Court of Indiana, in passing upon the question involving tne validity of marriage in the case of Teter vs. Teter, 101 Indiana, made the following decision: “The intention to assume tne relation of husband and wife, attended by pure and just motives and accompanied by an open acknowledgement of the relation, is suflieient to constitute a marriage ceremony, and we now say that no formal ceremony is necessary, and that if the motive is good, the intention to effect an immediate marriage is present and the pur pose to unite as husband and wife exists in the minds of both parties, mutual consent is all that is required.”

There is a wonderful amount of truth crowded into the following from the /Ve.v.s and Printer: The effort of any ne wspaper to build up a to vn is practically nidified unless it is hacked up by the business men. A stranger turns from the iiewscobmins of a paper to the advertising pages, and it hr fails to find there the business card of the merchants and professional firms, lie comes to the conclusion that the publisher is not appreciated, in which sai-e it is a good place for him to keep clear of. No town ever grew without the active assistance of its newspaper. Nor can papers grow ami build up their localities without the assistance of the town. Business men should realize ibis and rememoer in giving support to Hie newspaper they are not only building up their own business but helping to Mippnrt that which is steadily working for the benefit of the whole community. One of the flattest failures so far as actual work is concerned these warm days is that of the “Good Citizens League” over the state. About the only thing heard of these clubs is their organization. Greencastle has done well in not getting up such a fifth wheel hereabouts. One little deal such as our officers made at that south end
GALVESTON WANTS IT. Corbott-Fit/.'hninoti* Fiebt May Not Ho Fill led Oft Ht OhIIa*. Dallas, July 19.—Galveston washes the Corbett-Fitzsimmons glove contest. The capitalists and bnsiness men of that city have appointed a committee to come to Dallas and make a proposition to President Stuart of the Florida Athletic club. President Stuart said yesterday that Galveston’s proposition was a liberal one, including ground and building free, aud tiiat he would go there tomorrow to see about it. He says there is strong objection to the fight at Dallas, threats having been made to stop the construction of the amphitheater by injunction as soon as it is begun. The contracts for the fight, Stuart says, read “Texas,” and not “Dallas,” so there •will be uo complication in a change of location.
Missing' PackagA of Money. Omaha, July 19.—William H. Quick, general superintendent of the western division of the United States Express company, is here trying to locate the package containing $ti,000 missing from the United States express office in this city. He is not certain that the money had ever reached the Omaha office, hut four Omaha employes are on the carpet. Killed In a Svv.i r. Newark, N. Shirk Hmtrd From. Koftkvillr Republican. Last Wednesday evening an individual who afterward announced himself as John Shirk went to Spencer’s livery’ stable and put up his horse and buggy. He spent Thursday and Friday at the races and about town imbibing eonsideiable “oh be-joyful” in the meantime. At length he disappeared and the Spencers supposed they had a stolen outfit on their hands. Monday afternoon, however, Mr. Cooper, liveryman, of Greenestle, appeared on the scene, with a letter from Shirk, mailed at Indianapolis, telling him where he could find his horse and buggy. He was out the hire for the rig. his expenses over here and the charges for keeping horse several days. Mr. Shirk seems to have shirked bis whole duty in the premises. Th* Cloverrial* Hank ('allapn*. At the meeting of the creditors of the Cloverdale hank yesterday W. E. Horn, postmaster of the town, was chosen as assignee of the bank in the place of H. C. Foster, who refused to quality for the place. Mr. Horn was in the city today and qualified as assignee. He stated that the bank bad over one thous and dollars in cash in its safe. At the meeting of the depositors yesterday in the opera house D. Mnllnix again presided. A committee was appointed to ascertain from Mr. Cooper the amount of liabilities, both individedand bank. The committee reported that his liabilities would be about $8,000, Ihe assetts amounted to about $4,500, and other notes amounting to $3,500 which the appraisers listed as not good. Mr. Cooper agreed to make these notes good which if done will make the assets about the same as the liabilities. The Cloverdale people have var ions opinions. Some of them figure the bank will pay about 33^ cents on the dollar if the $3,600 notes are not secured, but if they are made good the bank will pay out about 75 per cent. There is a proposition on fool, to make a final settlement out of court saving court costs. By others it is said that Mr. Cooper’s course the best that can be done in the mutter. There will be another meeting in two weeks. Monon Excursion. Special excursion to Michigan City Wednesday morning, July 24. Very low rate. Bainbridge fair July 29 to Aug. *2, one and one third fare. THE HEARNE CASE.
No 'lore l><.|iosltiouH to lx- Taken nt Hnnnilml. t.iaiKl Jury Action. ^ Special Dispatch to t he Chronicle. W Hannibal. Mo., July is.—There are f no new developments in the Stillwell w murder m-e. K. H. Stillwell went to w Chicago fast night, and George A. Ma- J ban. i-i.un-el for Editor De Young, goes J to Chicago tonight to hold a conference with the ('hieago parties at the Auditorium at 9 o’clock Friday morning. Dr. Hearne and wife and Judge Hendriek will go to Chicago Friday and the deposition of Mrs. John Hayward will lie taken Saturday, it is hardly probable that any more depositions will lie taken in Hannibal, although Judge Hendrick says they will resume taking
depositions here next Monday.
The statement published in some of the newspapers that lie Young is assisting the Marion county grand jury in finding an indictment against Dr. Hearne and his wife, for the murder of Amos J. Stillwell, is absolutely w ithout any foundation whatever. The suit that is now being tried is a civil suit for libel, and the grand jury has nothing to do with it. , It is generaly believed, however tiiat the grand jury will take advantage of the depositions and will return an
indictment on August 27.
Prosecuting Attorney li .Clay Heather informed The Chronice correspondent today that he did not know what the grand jury would do, but he knew they had been investigating the murder. When asked if he would file a complaint against Dr. Hearne and wife charging them witli murder, he replied that he would not, that the mnt’.er was now before the grand jury and he did not propose to take it out of their
hands.
There are many persons in Hannibal who do not think Dr. Hearne will return to Hannibal from Chicago, to s<cure more depositions, although he is very determined and seems anxious to have the ease thoroghly investigated in this city.
