The commencement was a success. No little praise is due the commandant Lieut. E. K. Lewis for its excellence. His theory of discipline is in lint* with the underlying principles of a lepublican form of government, self control and a proper respect for the rights of others. There are evidently a few old fogies on the board of trustees—only a small minority we learn—who long for the old Wackford Sijueers system of education at Del'auw. They should be put olfthe board and their places tilled by men of monem ideas who have some conception of what a university should be. Of course the new methods of teaching cost money, and DePauw university lias no pull on the Mate treasury, hut there is only one such school in Indiana and tlie people of tin* state will see it sustained by Iil>eral contributions if Dr. John will stay with it. Otherwise it may drop hack into the rut of other institutions that pursue the methods of the middle ages.

The Baruum & Bailey’s Greatest Sho« on Earth will exhibit at Indianapolis Friday, May 31, and Brazil Saturday, June], and for these notable occasions various railroads have come to the front with such a low excursion rate that it is cheaper to go than to stay at home. The circus department eomprises every difficult equestrian act, aerial feat, arenic display, athletic and acrobatic trial, hippodrome race, animal trick, aud tnad-cap caper of clown and actor, with tumbling and leaping. The horses alone are valued at 11 (50,(100. Titen there are strange animal freaks, giant and pigmy creatures, odd and curious beasts and birds, and a giant gorilla and blue nosed mandrill, the only two In captivity in the world. The circus department contains only champions in their various lines and specialties, and duplicates of their acts or performances are almost impossible. Tlie equestrians, both male and female, are absolutely champions. All countries are represented by its greatest and best artists, a fact which could never be stated before with such absolute truth as this year. The moral part of the show is as great as its instructive features. while the general excellence prevailing everywhere is of such magnificent kind as to compel the admiration of young and old all over the country. It is a veritable world’s fair brought to your very doors. Full particulars as to the time of special trains, excursion rates, etc., can be obtained at tlie depot.
