Mrs. Susan Smith, of tins city, and Miss I.uella MeWhirter, of Indianapolis, have returned from Oregon, where they spent the winter. "ill Brissenden and Miss Hallie Gwin, of Lafayette, were married yesterday. The groom is a Mouon conductor well known here. Mrs. Kva Henry, of Anderson, wife of Congressman Henry, and Mrs. H. < . Allen, of Indianapolis, are guests of Mrs. (j. C. Smythe today. George E. Blake reports work progressing at the Wa-hington township mines; there is but little increase in the metal indications in the ore. George Welborn, formerly well known here in Del’auw, is visiting old friends. Mr. Welborn is in business at Owensville and is married. As we go to press this afternoon the streets are alive with with gaily dressed Odd Fellows, who are celebrating their anniversary day in great Miape. A good-sized band of gypsies hit the town last evening camping near the old fair grounds. They have about fifteen horses and the usual number of dogs. The high school alumni association will hold its annual meeting at the high school building Friday afternoon, May J, to transact mattf rs ot business. The hlo-soms were never out in greater profusion than this season. Apples, pears, plum-, cherries, -mall fruits and occasionally a peach blossom, all arc to he seen in their great beauty. Drs. Smythe and Hawkins and ’Squires Denny and Ashton are this afternoon holding an inquest over (ieorge Shoptnugh, whose condition lias grown much worse in the past few
days.
The meetings tit the Baptist church are intensifying in interest each evening. There will be a baptism this evening. You are cordially invited to attend the meetings and co-operate in them both to do good and get good. There will he some Odd Fellows in the new opera hott-e this evening, hut the aifalr will not he a poultry show, notwithstanding an immense streamer advertising the Putnam County I’oulassociation is shown on the outer walls.

The Greencastle laundry was shut down today by a slight accident to the boiler. Sheriff Clidewell took Mrs. Bessie Cox to tiie insane hospital at Indianapolis this morning. Mrs. T. G. Duvall will sing in the grand closing concert of tin* May festival tit Lafayette. T. J. McAdams and James Sprankle saw the “Giliied Fool” played at Indianapolis last evening. The I. 0. O. The latest report from the DePauw quartet was received from Quincy, 111., and Wits to the efi’e t that the club was just recovering from the elleets of poison which they suppose was in a lunch they had at a restaurant. They were quite sick for a while but pulled through all right and will be home Saturday. Yesterday the Lebanon Evening New* was sold to C. I). Case, of Attica, who assumes full control. Mr. Case iabout thirty yeats old. Me has worked on papers in New York and other eastern cities and is a practical printer. Mr. Loftin will remain with the Ncics as ediior.—Lebanon Patriot. E. Dr. Oron Druley and Miss Media Miller were married Wednesday evening at the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Forbes Holton, in Anderson. Guests were present from Cincinnati, Mimcie and Marion. Mi—Julia A. Druley, of the school of music, was in attendance. Dr. and Mrs. Druley will reside in Anderson. Mr. Druley formerly attended DePauw and is well known here. The financial condition of the Lotti--ville, New Albany & Chicago is improving. and with this the securities of the road are advancing. The directors held a meeting yesterday in New York to consider the policy of the road for | the future. Under the proposed new financial plan its indebtedness is placed in a position to be easily handled and to considerably cut down its annual fixed charges. State Geologist Bhitchley, in speaking of the unii-iial and most destructive development of apple-tree lice in Indiana, said that the insect could be destroyed by spraying the trees with an emulsion composed of thirteen gallons of water, one of kerosene and one quart of milk, or with a tobacco tincture made by pouring boiling hot water upon a pound of tobacco and letting the mixture stand over night. Tazewell Dodd, who lived west of town, is reported missing. It is not known where he lias gone. He took with him ids young son by his first wife and left his second wife. Just before Ids departure he is reported to have drawn out at Indianapolis some building and loan association funds which he had there, to the amount of over $0000.
