Miss Nellie Wood nas the victor, and she, in the | opinion of all, was clearly entitled ! to the honors. She is the second young woman to do such, Miss E. Her production was ou ‘ The Nation’s Perpetuity,” and it was full of patriotism, earnestness and liopefillness, and her manner was one that at once went to the hearts of her hearers and the judges. Commenting oa Miss Wood's oration, the Indianapolis Journal
says:
Miss Wood, the Quaker orator, was the next speaker announced. Being j the only young lady upon the program, she was greeted witli a heartier applause than that which greeted the others. Her manner was such as to capture tli ’ hearts of all, and during the twenty-live minutes she spoke everybody in the house was all attention. Miss Wood’s gestures were perfect and tier v.iiee was strong and soft, and not in the least harsh. She spoke witli feeling and life, showing that she was interested in her subject. Her introduction was sn hopeful, so unlike many college orations of the past, that everybody was taken by surprise, which grew to intense interest. All through

This seems to be an oil year for DePauw. No foot ball victories, no oratorical victory, and it seems from the amount of hustling the other schools are doing that we shall have no base ball victories. However, we can’t expect always to win in oratory. The other fellows must have a show occasionally to keep up appearances of a contest. As the pri/.e had to go abroad and couldn't be kept at home, the Ban nek Times is satisfied that the young lady of Earlham captured it.
