A pretty house lias Its outgrow tli from refinement, fine discrimination, from a good conscience, or rather a conscience for good things. An artistic house goes beyond all this. It has in it the element of large comprehension, a fullness of refinement A thing to be artistic must convey the impression of beauty nnd sense. In order that there may be tho conveyance there must lie the element of beauty and sense back of it all A pretty thing pleases one; an artistic development instructs; instruction is a pleasure, and thus It is that the artistic lias added to it the element of larger intelligence. There arc few of our buildings which have had this kind of thought added to them. People have an idea that a house in order to be pretty must cost a good deal of money. The fact that a house is attractive nnd at the same time expensive is merely a coincidence. It is true that many expensive houses arc pretty and artistic, hut it is merely because tho artistic sense and money were used together I; a cheap cornice is to bo designed fora simple house, the rafters may be cut to show a pretty pattern as well as an ugly

It occurred to Jenncr in 1780 that it might lie possible to propagate tho cowpox, and with it tho security from smallpox lirst from the cow to tho human body and then from one person to another. Many experiments were tried successfully, but there was much opposition to tho new practice, and its success soeined uncertain till a year had passed, when 70 leading physicians and surgeons signed a declaration of their entire confidence in it. The soil in which trees are set should, as a rule, be in a thorough state of cultivation. It is generally best to put tho land designed for an orchard into hoed crops the previous season. There is much difference of opinion as to the relative | merits of fall and spring planting. This question must be settled by each indi- ! vidnal, who knows best his own sur-
roundings and conditions.
Trees are usually set too close togeth- I or. Trees are wide feeders, and tho best j results are obtained when each tree stands far enough from its neighbor to allow it to possess an individuality all its own. Sparse planting also facilitates spraying and better cultivation. The distance at which trees may bo set deI pends much on tho system of pruning. If heading in is followed vigorously,

Tho investigations of individuals and nf the stations make it appear that yellows is incurable, and its termination is always fatal. It is a distinct disease, i attacking peach lives of all ages and io all conditions of vigor. Tho yellows is i I communicable from tree to tree. It is | j readily communicated to uuisory stock , i by affected buds, even by buds from I those branches of affected trees which do not yet show any signs of tho yellows. Pits from affected trees may bo j expected to propagate tho disease. Tho cause of the disease is unknown.
