TO MARRY NEGROES- 1 Fault.

Goethe’s sublime tragic poem “Faust.” Mr. Griflitli is a good devil, in that he portrays that character with all the par-excel-

girl and they wanted to try it, what lence of devilishness; expressing

would he say? Here from Terre Haute:
The Terre Haute literary club has been startled by a paper from Rev. Dr. Hickman, pastor of the First Methodist church, which presented a long array of arguments in lavor of solving the negro problem in the south by amalgamation of the two races, the abrogation of laws ptohibiting miscegenation and the intermarriage of the two rac-'S. Dr. Hickman stated that he presented the argument for what it was worth. Born a Virginian, and himself a slave holder at the breaking out of the war, the idea ass naturally repulsive to him, but he expressed the conviction that, despite our prejudices, the problem is destined to be solved in just this way, and he contended that mixed races have in the past produced the strongest people. He laid down as
a fundamental principal this:
‘•A mixed race in competition with a pure race, other conditions being equal, w ill lie the intellectual
ttnd physical superiors.”
There is no natural repulsion between the races. White and eol ored children play together with perfect freedom. The repulsion, he thinks, comes later by education ttnd surroundings. It is due he contends largely to former con ditions of servitude to the negro
essays the part in a style all his own, and certainl}- comes nearer the popular idea of the “Angel of Darkness” than any actor upon the stage. The production itself will he a treat to its audiences being somewhat out of the usual line, it should hold the interest and at tention of its beholders, particularly the famed “Brocken” scene in which electrical and calcium effects are important factors. The company in support of Mr. Griffith is a strong one and aid materially in presenting this masterwork in a a thorough and faultless manner.
The KiimIi to Indianapolis. This is Indianapolis day, and the low rates captured more people than was expected. The rain, no doubt, kept some away, but enough went to cause the coaches to Indianapolis to be jammed. All this, of course, takes money out of the town, and it is a practice that is entirely too common for the business good of our cit}’. But Unpeople will go. as they have done for years, and will do for years, and as many of them are business men, it is, of course, their own affair. An excursion to Indianapolis for pleasure or oratorical contest is all right occasionally, hut as a shop-

It contains more manufacturing interests, large mining interests, a large foreign population, thus throwing into the congressional campaigns elements with which this county at any rate has not had to deal. Terre Haute will be, most probably, the convention city. A Drummer Says Grace. A well known drummer was recently called upon to say grace at a certain hotel dinner table, and though not posted in religious matters, with the proverbial nerve of his kind, he made an attempt to conceal his ignorance by extemporizing the following: “Our landlord at the bead of the table, \v - baliow thy name, let tiie beefsteak cone, let it bo properly done, let it be free from taint; give us this day some ham and eggs, also fruit in season; forgive us when wo kick as we forgive those that kick against us, lead us not into unclean, buggy beds, deliver us from dirty towels ami cockroaches, and thine be the glory and two dollars t.r-r i!hY for owr niii'l evef,
