and then beheaded. The greater part of his remains ate said to be buried in the church of St. Praxedes. Borne, where there was a gate named for him. The custom of valentines oiigiuated in ancient Rome. The names of young wore en were placed in boxes and then drawn out by the young men. The day was called Lupercalia, and occurred in the latter part of Feb ruary. When the Christian religion gained sway the day was chosen as a suitable day for the young people to draw the names of their chosen ones from the box, and thus tbe paper on which the names were written became known as ‘’Valentines.” Why St. Valentine's day was chosen is a mystery. When the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were reached the custom of young men giving their lady loves gold and diamond rings and oilier costly presents prevailed It was then believed the first young man a young woman met on this day was to be her future husband. It is even now believed by some people that birds mate on this day.

Terrible Misery Helpless With Rheumatism and Without Appetite

with a severe verse in connection.

This is the way the day is now celebrated. In olden times it was

different.

The origin of Hie observance of the day is obscure. The saint him self, who was a p"iest of Rome, mirtyred in the third century, seems to have had nothing to do with the matter beyond the accident of his day being used for the purpose. St. Valentine met a sad

death, being fir-d beaten with clubs night.
