No Drinking Men on the Monon. Lafayette < ourier. In conformity with the order ts*ued by general officials of the Mnnon road regarding the habits of the employes, within the past lew days several of the employee have been on the “green carpet” answer ing questions as to their temperance proclivities. They found that it was useless to make a general denial, as the company had pre pared itself to verify any charge made. It is well known that Supt. Lowell, while not a prohibitionist in a strict construction of the word, is radically opposed to the use u intoxicating liquors, and especially while the men are on duty. Train master Sucese is equally strict it the same line, and those under these men understand the situation exactly. A few days ago a well known employe was called to tin headquarters of the road at Chi caao, and asked by tt general officer if he was not in the habit of drink ing. He replied that he was not when the officer produced a record showing how many times, the ex act places and the dates that he bad been drinking within the two weeks that hail passed. The employe was told to go back to work, but that in the future he and all others would be expected to abstain from the use of liquors when in the ser vice of the company. Other cm ployes have gone through the same questioning, but have all been given an opportunity to return to work, but with the understanding that the temperance rule must not be violated again.

that head, at one* sprang into favor. Mr. De R va came to this country from Vienna, and had an engagement with Remenyi, but the company disbanded, as it could not stand it* salary list. He was then secured by the Wilczek company. In addition to being an accomplished and very sympathetic ac companist, Mr I)e Riva is an artistic so'oist. His work is marked by brilliant execution, wonderful expression and a well balanced fin i*h, showing a remarkable evenness. His first number brought out an encore, and he played Danse Osseanique, by Gottschalk. As tin encore number to Godard's Valse Chroraatique lie played a gavotte, by Raff. Mr. De Riva's work was a genuine enjoyment, and there was an absence of pounding, a habit indulged in too much hereabouts, that was a relief. Mr. De Riva would draw well here in a recital

program.

Mr. Wilczek is not new to Greencastle, and again demonstrated his ability as a violin virtuoso. He wrs greeted by great applause on his rendition of Vieuxtetnp’s Fan tasie, ami gave encore numbers each time, playing in part second Sarasate’s Gypsy Dance. He is an artist. Mme. Wilczek coutributid to the evening’s enjoyment in violin work, solo and in duet with her husband. Mr. DePasquali ap-j peared to good advantage in Ins i vocal numbers, meeting with encore applause. Mrs. Ballmann did not meet with a flattering reception, due perhaps to the fact that she was new to the company, having taken the place of the regular soprano at i 8t. L >uis. i ne concert was a success, and most thoroughly enjoyed. Revival Service* at Culiea« Avenue Bro. Walker was deiained in Greencaslle yesterday while waiting for word in regard to Ins futuie movements. Being hete he preached last night. After the sermon the meeting was dismissed and a second service, of the nature of an in- j quiry meeting, was then hold in the j Sunday school room. This was by! long odds the liveliest meeting that lias yet been held, and to some it seemed as though it was the turning point in the services. Several asked for prayers and a very deep

interest was manifest.

All Washington is snickering at Mr. James II. Eckels, who gained some notoriety by being called the '‘buy comptroller” when Mr. Cleveland, without consulting Secretary Carlisle, ' gave him the position of comptroller of the currency. He has since added to that notoriety by a series of after-din- | tier financial speeches, not always in harmony with either Mr. Cleveland’s or Mr. Carlisle's ideas. A dinner is indirectly responsible for the before mentioned snickering. The dinner was given over in Baltimore, and Mr Eckels was a guest, lie returned to Washington on a late train, in the midst of a heavy snow storm, and entered a public carriage to he carried home. While in the carriage he took a notion that he was about to be kidnapped, and silently opening the door of the moving carriage he bolted for home through the •now, not forgetting, however, his dress suit case. Nothing more ridiculous bus happened for quite a while, and the idea of Eckels getting his head sufficiently swelled to imagine that he was of sufficient importance to be kidnapped was funny enough to make a street car horse laugh. He should hereafter be accompanied by a chaperone

when he attends a dinner.

On Fridav, the8th. Unde Isaac Firestone dieil of cancer of the face, making the third death in our village inside of eight days. At this rate, if continued for ten months, the town would he depopulated. Mr. Firestone is one of Putnam county’s oldest pioneers. Ilis exact age is hard to get at, hut he must certainly have been from ninety to ninety-five years of age at death. He came from his native state, Pennsylvania, at an early d-ite. Anyhow lie landed and went into camp on the ground about where the Bates house of Indianapolis, now stands, and mowed the grass probable for the first time off' of that spot, intending to locate here, as the land surrounding him could have been bought very cheap, but owing to the land being so flat and swampy, lie concluded it an unhealthy section and moved on west and entered land fr> | north Putnam county on Ramncieek near tne old mill, called Blakesburg. The date of his settling in Putnam county il i- iwlieved. wa? along about Die twenties. He afterwards went to Clinton Falls and started a tan yard, where he lived for many years. About forty-seven years ago he moved to this place and built another tannery, and lived an honest, upright man, having j been a member of the Christian church I for about fifty years. 11c leaves an aged widow, five sons and four daugh|ters, allof whom reside in Parke and
