as far as it tloos. There is law enough in the state of Indiana to wipe out a considerable portion of iis saloons, and to reduce greatly the evils ot the remainder; hut the trouble is, this law is violated with impunity because of the difficulty of its enforcement. If it were prac t’cully certain that the saloon would be detected in the violation of law and found guilty by the c uirts, it would not violate the law; and as a consequence its numbers would be /greatly diminished and the evils of the survivors materially lessened.”

l ull of People.

That there is a decided temperance sentiment in Greeneastle was evidenced by the mass* meeting called out on Saturday evening, in response to hand bills and newspaper announcements. The court house was crowded to overflowing with people of both sexes and all shades of religions and political belief. They came tor a purpose, and that purpose was t arried out to the satisfaetion of the most earnest en- [ thusiast, ami the meeting was very successful, fulfilling the purpose for whicti it was ealled—an endorsement of and to urge tile passage of the Nicholson temperance bill now pending before the leg's-

laiure.

The meeting opened at eight o’clock with every seat in the liou-e taken. Mayor Birch presided, and in a briet manner stated the object of the meeting and discussed the intense interest manifested in temperance legislation during the session of the general assembly. A quartette composed of Messrs. Gil hert and Burlingame, Miss Rowley and Mrs. New house sang “My Country ’Tis of Thee” in a most beautiful manner. Pres. J P. D. John, the next speaker of the even ing, made an earnest and pointed address, saying in substance we are here as citizens of a great commonwealth, and not as members of a politH a! organization or church to ! look after the welfare of this great commonwealths. He pointed out the commendable features of the present liquor law and also the inadequacy of it. The doctor is

CIRCUIT COURT.

Opening of the Putnam IVbruary Term. A Fair Sized Doeket.

Putnam circuit court xvas ushered in this morning with an interesting departure from ordinary motions Attorney Alice sprung a surprise by moving that Mrs. Jeanette P. Layne lie admitted to the bar as a practicing attorney. Mr. Allee followed his motion by speaking of Mrs. Layne’s ability and study for the legal profession. The oath was administered by Clerk Cullen and Mrs. Layne is now a member

of the bar.

The docket contains fifteen state cases; thirty nine probate causes and seventy two civil suits. The state docket’s first call resulted in the following action : State vs. Adolph Kelly et al, adultery; nollied. State vs. YVm. Peyton, selling liquor on Sunday; nollied. State vs. Edward L. Foster, petit larceny; nollied. State vs. Dan'el Murphy, assault and battery, nollied. James W. Hibbs and James Greene, the fellows who broke into and robbed Will Hammond’s smoke house several weeks ago, plead guilty in ttie circuit court this afternoon, and were fined $10 each

tha genius, character ami leitile resources ot the illustrious Washing ton are interesting in themselves, but rendered the more so by their being given largely in the language of one of Washington's body guard, an e\e witness to the scenes. Dr. Fisk, during his college lite, was fortunate in being thrown in the company with several of the participants in the Revolution, and reoeived directly from them many stories of heroism, endurance and patriotism, not given through the ordinary channels of history. Being a lover of history, and especial ly of historic incident, he has treasured them to be given out in the freshness and forcible English of which lie is master. Appreciating, as we think, the great value of such lectures in the raising of the standard of our culture, we trust that this is but the opening of a luine, full ol the best metal, and that Rockport may have the benefit of many others.
