An exchange sa\s: Hard times seem to be favorable to great religious revivals. Many people never appreciate the comforts of life properly until they are put on •hort rations. Then they begin to think and wonder why they were not thankful sooner. It is a fact not generally known that Hon. W. II. Ragan and Dr. G. Bence were members of the legisture that passed the present liquor law twenty years ago, and Dr. Bence was chairman of the committee on temperance, being a member from Clay county, residing at Carbon. A farmer once wrote to an editor of a paper asking turn what the weather in the next mon'.h would lie like. The reply given was: “The weather next month will lie very iiiueh like tour subseription bill.” After a little pondering the inquirer recollected that his hill was •‘unsettled,’’ and so he at once sent a postal order. Snst who is to blame for the little interest taken in the state oratorical is hard to determire. Certain it is, however, that something is wrong or some one is to censure. If the contestants cannot lie composed of tlie representative men of the college, the college had better withdraw at once from tlie association and stop this farce. Nothing is intended personally against tlie two contestants tonight; they are not to he blamed, for as long as the college holds contents it is their privilege to enter. But the point is, that if we cannot send our best speakes, who should be chosen from a li>t of titteeu or sixteen at least; it is wrong, and places us in a false light, to he represented as we have been and are likely to be.—Craic/urdarillt

One of the greatest nuisances teachers have to contend with in the public rchool is the cigarette. A number of hoys use the obnoxious article to such au extent as make themselves disagreeable to other scholars in the same room, and they decline to sit near the “fiends” as a consequence. If some of these hoys don’t let up on their habit, some one will be compelled to sit by their biers. The cigarette is not only disgusting, but it is
deadly.

However, each man put forth his best effort in his style, and not very many of them lacked spirit. Each man seemed well compo-ed and master of tlie occasion, making the course of speeches flow very smoothly. Mr. Kenny was confused by the announcement of the president and the duet by Burlingame and Gilbert, making his entrance about two steps in front of the ladies announeed for that number. The president finally stopped him and Mr. Kenny showed his reserve and nerve by not being etnbarassed in the slightest degree.
