Tin: death of Gen. M. 1). Manson is recorded in our news columns today. Mr. Manson was a wellknown character in Indiana, anti a soldiers’ reunion in this section of the state was incomplete without the massive presence of the old “war horse,” as many of the hoys called him. At the reunion here last August he was an honored guest, and his short talks then were much enjoyed. He was a vet eran of the Mexican and Civil wars, and had held high honors, civic and militarv.

Recent IlnluiK rotieerntnjf the Hik Four Knickerbocker Work* a IlnrtlHhip. Small towns located on some of the eastern main lines are causing considerable trouble by their aggressive attitude in respect to fast train service, says the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. They insist that the through fast trains shall stop, hotli east and west hound, anil are earning their contention to the courts. Within the past few days an adverse ruling to railroads was made in the ease of the Big Four, at Hillsboro, the court hold ing that Hillsboro is a county seat, and notwithstanding the interstate character of through last trains they should lie scheduled to stop at that place. There was no complaint about the ordinary daily service at Hillsboro; in fact, the citizens admitted that the town was conveniently served with trains in both directions, but they wanted to share in the benefits of the noon, day service out of St. Louis. The Big Four people pointed out that a fast train could not be scheduled to make frequent s.ops and run on time daily, and that the Knieker booker service was not established for the accommodation of small in termediate points, but for the oonvienience of the large commercial centers. Such a service derives its support entirely from the large and not the small cities along ihe liue. If the Hillsboro ruling should be enforced at all minor points of the system, there would soon be an end to all through last train service between St. Louis and the cast. The matter is of some importance in these days o! swift travel, and a judicial expression from the higher courts would be very desirable for interstate lines.

Washington, Feb. J, ISD"). WlienSeimtorI.ee Mantle, of Montana, t ok the oath of < IHce the democratic majority of the senate disappeared—let us hope never to t ome back again. The senate now consists of eighty-six members, lorty-three democrats, thirty eight republicans and live populists. When the republican senators from Wyoming and Wa-hington take their seats the senate will he full for the lirst time for several years, and forty-live will be a majority. The only change made by the accessions to the senate, from a tinaucial point of view, is to strengthen the silver men, who already had a majority. As an answer • o appeals which have been made to them to join hands with the administration and pass a tinaucial bill, several republican senators have made a careful canvass of the senate and the result is that forty-seven sen tors are for the free coinage of sliver and thirty-nine against it. I he free coinage men will have for v-nine votes when the Washington and Wyoming senators arrive. There is a hitch in the administruMon’s program for the new issue of bonds. While it is given out that the administration is waiting to see if congress will act upon Mr. Cleveland’s gold bond recommendation, it is well known tha the delay has been caused by the demands of the capitalists who are expected to subscribe for the new bonds. Orders have been issued to the bureau of engraving and printing to print $500,000.0(10 of 1 per cent thirty year bonds authorized by ihe specie resumption act of 1875. hut w hat amount will be issued is not yet known. Mr. rlevoland I* said to favor ad ertis ng for bids without stating any specified amount and accenting all satisfactory bids, hut the cabinet is understood to be divided on that idea. The question may he settled at the cabinet meeting to be held tomorrow.

The complainant states that her husband and his co-defendant fraudulently combined to defraud her out of real estate to the value of $800, representing to her when she was in leeble health that it would be to her best interest to sign the deed for the sale of the same; that shortly after the deed was made her husband left for
tempts to control tlie legislative branch should he warning enough. The most disgraceful personal encounter of the present session—the only one in fact—was that in which two democrats—Breckinridge, of Ky., and Heard, of Mo., were the principals. There would have been a regular rough and tumble tight on the floor of the house had no one interfered. The epithets “liar” and “eo, temptihle scoundrel” were exchanged, and then, as usual apologies were ottered and the house gave its consent to striking the | whole business f om the record. The house will this week decide what shall be done w ith the Cleveland gold bond bill, the committee on rules having decided to report an order setting aside Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for its consideration. If this order is adopted by the house the final, vote will be taken next Thursday, but there seems a probability, notwithstanding the extraordinary etforts of the administration to prevent it. that tlie order may meet the same fate as the order for the consideration of the Carlisle currency bill—be rejected r>y the house. So far as the final resuP is concerned it does not make the slightest ditlercnce what disposition Ihe house makes of either the order or the bill, us the latter cannot possibly get reported to the senate, even should it pass the house.
