death.
Tho cook was a Rhode Island man named Joseph (Jray Ho was about 23 vears of age, and though a good cook was not looked upon as having average intelligence. Tho bark was not injured in driving over tho ret f and finally brought up mi the sandy beach of an i - land called Wing-Lee. Tho island had about 300 inhabitants at that time, being mainly <'hine.so and mostly men ingaged in (ishitig and shell gathering When daylight came, tho storm had abated, and the wrecked v, s-rl was .
tho whole affair gave him credit beyond what you would imagine. Tho party which landed to attack him was sot upon by a force of 200 men and almost annihilated. The cannonade of the government craft was so vigorously replied to and wiih so much better aim that after an lu.ur she was tlrivt n out of the tight, with a hiss of 20 men. It was a glorious victory for <!ray, and within 30 days thereafter over 1,000 natives occupying other islands came to set! In on Wing Leo and tender allegiance to the king. In I860 Gray had 3,000 settlers on Ins island and an army of 800 men. His pt tiple fished and gathered shells and till d tho land, and from all accounts were pi a s ful and contented. The cargo was disposed of slowly and hit by bit, and tho proceeds were used for the benefit of the common-
wealth.
Any government hut that of the Chinese would have settled the matter in short order, but after the second attack j there was an interval of almost a year before a third expedition was started out. By this time Gray bail more can- j non and a larger and better drilled army, | and when ho learned that a force of three war junks and 1,000 men were to bo sent against him he was not a bit alarmed. Wing-Leo island is ten miles long by five in breadth. When the expedition appeared, men were landed at j three different points on the island, and the largest of the junks took up a posi i tion off the wreck and opened a hot bombardment. It is a matter of record that the parties landed were driven off with severe loss, and Gray, who was personally in command of tho hulk and tlie forfs, made it so hot for tho juuk that she ran out of the fight. His loss was only about 30 men, while the expedition suffered a loss of over 200. Soon after the attack two rebellions broke out in China at once, and Gray might havu remained undisturbed for another year but for the action of the American and the British governments.
low ID* tsianners to gel away, no convinced Gray of his friendly and merciful intentions, but the man was obstinate. He was not only a bravo man, but hail tho chivalry of a warrior. His people were not willing to go. and bo would rot skulk away and leavo them to fi; in a battle. Ho called a meeting of t':o prominent men while Captain 1 Bari e ; v 'In v', and tho unanimous:
duel ion was to fight.
Tl ey went given the day to think it o\ r, and it was not until the morning of (he next day that the Chester took up , apo-ition outside of the range of tho; vvali ■ siinon in the forts and opened fir-'. The object was todrivothe natives out rather than to kill them, and shells were useil to destroy the hulk and fort and the villages along the shore. Tho bombardment was continued from morning till night, and after the first two hours it was hoped to see a signal of surrender. By 3 o'clock in the afternoon the hulk and the fort were knocked to pieces, and neither bullet nor hall had reached the Chester. A boat was sent ashore, and Gray was asked to surrender. Ho had lost a great many men and fully realized his helpless situation, but
lie refused to give in.
That night at midnight about 40 small craft, carrying three to ten men each, pulled off the shore and attacked tho Chester. She was taken by surprise, believing tho islanders to be thoroughly disorganized, and had a close shave from being captured. In the attack she lost 25 men and the islanders a hundred. 1 It was hoped this would put an end to the affair, hut next day tho king was still defiant, and tho ship lesnn.ed tho bombardment. No guns were tired in answer, anil about 3 o’clock in the afternoon the islanders began to leave in ^ such craft as remained to them. They were not molested in their going. In i fact, tho order from Captain Barin 'was not to see them. He hoped that Gray would go off with the rest, but the sea cook king rowed out to tho ship and

The first move on tne pari of luu captain of the Chester was to demand an unconditional surrender. This was ! promptly refused. Tho Chinese government, in its. instructions to the captain, had loft it discretionary with him ! whether ho should behead all prisoners or have them conveyed to the nearest port for trial It was expressly stipu latcd, however, that tho king, if taken aiive, should be sent to lYking for trial and punishment. The trial would be a farce and the punishment something
horrible.
The name of the captain of the Chester was Walter Barnes, an Englishman, who had been a lieutenant in tho royal navy. Ho was a kind hearted and humane man, and though ho intended to break up the king's rule on Wing Lee island und drive away all the population he wished to avoid bloodshed.
