W. P. Wood leaves tonight for the south. Mrs. F. G. Gilmore is visiting in Indianapolis. Dr. Duvall lectured in New A1 bany last evening. John P. Allee was in Indianapolis today on business. Miss Gelia Kimble, of Mt. Vernon, is visiting friends. Ed. S. Sheridan, of the Chicago Record, is visiting his mother. Gus Hettis has moved to the corner of Indiana and Hanna streets. Will Murphy, of Crawfordsville, visited friends in the city yesterday.

Hon. T. T. Moore is down from Indianapolis today. He reports the republican legislature as running smoothly, and confidently expects that all the reforms predicted by bis party will bo faithfully executed. Mr. Moore’s family is with him at Indianapolis. Robert John came home from Chicago yesterday where he lias had a position on the Record at general reporting. Robert has made a successful start in the newspaper work and likes the business. He left last night for St. Louis, where lie takes a position on the Republic, having resigned his Chicago place. Granville Moore and T. T. Moore have formed a partnership in law^ business, and are now located in tlie looms formerly occupied by the latter. Mr. Allen, their land lord, has renovated, repaired and refurnished the rooms umil now they are one of the handsomest suites of office in the city. John R Miller has taken the rooms vacated by Mr. Granville Moore in the Nelson block. Miss Hula Farrow was pleasantly' surprised last evening at her home, two miles east of the city, by a few of L r friends. The occasion was a pleasant one, and after spending a delightful evening the guests reluctantly departed. The following were present: Tom Dai nail, Albert Graham. County Superintendent Lyon is attending township institute at Fillmore today. The new Vandaha time card to go into effect tomorrow appears in our issue today. Mrs. W. E. Reynolds, of St. Louis, is visiting at the home of Mrs. Anna Southard. Rev. Frank S. Ditto, of DePauw university, will occupy the Presbyterian pulpit tomorrow morning. Under its new train schedule the Vandalia will have seven trains east and six trains west daily. Four of them meet here. The low price of bread made by our local bakers is shutting out a great deal of bread that lias been shipped here from abroad. James Matthews is mourning the death of a friend—his faithful family horse. Uncle Jim has adopted Joe Baker's horse for the winter. The Daily Banner Times is the closest read paper in the city. It gives the local news when it occurs, not several days thereafter. Col. Miles, whose death was recorded yesterday by the press dispatches, was colonel of Mayor Birch’s old regiment, the sixtythird. Miss Caroline I). Rowley, pianist, assisted by Miss Fernie and Mr. ScbelUchmidt, will give a recital in Mcharry hall on next Wednesday evening. A letter from Harry Paris teceived today by his folks states he is improving rapidly under the water treatment there, and the doc tor predicted his full recovery in a few days. The D. Six jurymen, three attorneys, a justice of the peace and a constable or two and one hog are holding court in Justice Ashton's mill today. The case began yesterday anil comes from Washington township. Win. R. Crowder is the p aintiff and sued Wm. Fisher to replevin one bog valued at seven dollars. That will he an expensive piece of pork before the costs are settled. The litigants could have saved money by cutting the animal

The newspaper reporter is subject to limitations. The news docs not come to him by instinct. In general he obtains it from somebody else. This must be so in most cases. The reporter is always grateful for specific and accurate information, and he wants to be accurate. Very frequently he has no time for independent investigation and he most trust somebody. On all matters of interest to the public we want facts, but we want “straight goods.” In nine cases out of ten where injury is done to honest people by a newspaper it ts the fault of some out sitier giving assumed fa-ts with cn interior design or with simple carelessness uz to facte. William M. Hillis vs. Louisville, New Albany A Chicago railway company is the title of an action for damages in the Putnam circuit court. The eomplaint is similar to the one filed by Samuel H. Hillis of which mention lias been made in these columns heretofore. The lands of the plaintilf joins those of Samuel H. Hillis and Charles McFarland, and he sues for damages alleged to have grown out of the same fire that is said to have destroyed the others' property. W. M. Hillis claims to have lost 110 panels of rail fence to the value of $20; one straw rick valued at $25; a piece of plank fence of value of $3, and five to eight acres of wheat valued at $10, total $58. Allee A Nelson bring the action. The will of the late Rev. Edmondson has been admitted to pro bate. It directs that his debts first be paid, gives to Mrs. Ester Hurdle $100 as a token of his apprccia tion of her kindness, gives $100 to

Bloomington will send a large delegation over to attend their speakers and why ean we not treat them to the finest time they ever had? The first meeting of the general gymnasium class occurred this afternoon at 4 p. m. Abnutone hundred were present and the class promises to become a permanent

The date for the Athletic coni cert is indefinitely postponed owing to the illness of Mr. Paris, and until further arrangements are completed for a substitute. The date will lie announced in this column when arranged. Geo. E. Mason, ex 95, is now at Evanston, finishing his course. All the paths leading to the college buildings are a mass of ice and it is almost impossible to retain a footing. .Many funny spec taclcs were furnished this morning. The history department is again blooming fortii in full blossom, everybody trying to hand in their topic papers. Guy Walker has been spending a few days with his Phi Psi brothers and other college friends.
