The following tribute to winter is of unknown origin; ‘‘It blows and it snows, and it stings your nose—makes all creation shiver; it bites your toes, increases your woes and freezes up the river. The classes of '99 and 1900 of DePauw university met yesterday afternoon at the coiner of Locust and Seminary streets and had a young riot. Clubs, rocks and ev-1 erything available were used with telling effect and resulted in several black eyes, some bruised heads, and the loss of several square inches of cuticle. Bert Little, a ’99 man, was hit across the head by a board with a big nail in it and an ugly cut was made. He was taken to Dr. Smythe’s office
and the wound dressed.
Jesse W. VVcik, of this city, visited Cincinnati over Wednesday, and reports an enjoyable stay. Concerning his visit to the Queen City, the Enquirer says: Mr. Jesse W. Weik, of Greencastle, who was for many years postoffice inspector in this city, and who resigned a year ago to devote himself
students and visitors, enjoying during their wait for the commencement of the program college yells, class songs and the many other ways the college people in general have for such occasions. Before the evening’s entertainment began, the ’97 mascot amused every one with his reputed boom a alackas ;l and little song, scoring quite a sue cess over the eiforts of the older merry-makers. The following is
the program of the evening.

Mr. Weik was the joint author of “The Life of Lincoln,” by Herndon, who was the law partner and private secretary of Lincoln for 25 years. and it would not lie worth while to praise them separately, as their names are always good security for the value of the subjects following them. Dr. Ridpnth. in a very neat talk, gave the life of Dr. Andrus, presented the portrait on behalf of the Indianapolis alumni and unveiled it. Dr. John represented the university in the acceptance. This closed the program. Every one was disappointed because James Whitcomb Riley, one of our most distinguished guests.who sat on the platform, would not respond to the many requests of the audience to speak. By a previous agreement witli Dr. John, he was only to sit
on the platform as a guest. After this very pleasing program
had been carried out, the large audience was invited to go below and enjoy the reception which had been arranged and given into the hands of the senior, junior, sophomore and freshman classes and the art school. The halls <m the first floor of east college were profusely decorated witli clcae, und college colors, flowers, statuary and other beautiful decorations. The sopho mores and freshmen had charge of the refreshments, which were served in the best possible manner, owing to the large crowds constantly surging through the rooms. Participants enjoyed themselves hugely, and did not return to their homes until the farewell “Noble Duke ol York" had been sung through every corridor,
ball and room of east college. While the merry crowd was
marching in Plato hall, some one shut the door, breaking the lock, so that those within waited nearly an hour before they were released, after which the finale circuit of Meharry hall was made, and then every one bade good night. The celebration did more to arouse col lege spirit than any occurring here in years. Every one was at home, alumni, citizens and stu
