Speaking of the aetion of the Indiana college presidents on foot ball, the Lafayette Courier understands that they are not intent on antagonizing legitimate athletics, hut are determined to break up the slugging practices which have served to bring foot ball playing into well merited dis repute. All of which, it thinks, reflects credit upon the wisdom of the college presidents, and their timely offices should receive the indorsement of public, press and students.

Another report is that these religious enthusiasts became convinced that the devil had taken possession of a certain burly citizen and they determined to beat the aforesaid man until they drove satan from him. He wasn’t exactly willing, however, and drew a knife and threatened to kill the first man who touched him. His persecutors decided they had barked up the wrong tree and next turned their attention to an old man, whom they could handle. Two of them it is said threw him down and nearly beat him to death before they got the devil to flee. This was done on Christmas in the open air and near a big bon fire. The devil jumped from the man’s body into the fire and the zealots joined hands and danced about the

Very little hope is now entertained by any democrat that the t.'arlisle currency hill will be passed- by the house in its present shape and not much that it will he passed in any shape, and none whatever : hat it will be passed bv tbe senate. But the ablest financiers in congress agree in saying that if the currency bill were to become a law tomorrow it would do the treasury more harm than good. Even Secretary Carlisle, who is willing to nose as author of the bill, admits that it would not help the treasury for some time to come and that he is not altogether certain that it ever would. Meanwhile the drain on the gold in the treasury and the receipts of the government continue to be much less than its expenditures. These facts have aroused the republicans to the necessity of formulating a plan for legislation at the extra session, if one They don’t want an extra

The New Year’s tree at Fox Ridge church last evening was the occasion of a very pleasant time. A highly interesting program of songs and recitations was rendered in a creditable manner. Since John L.
