A woman who probably voices tho question ot a great many other women writes to ask how she shall invest her savings. She is a working woman who has accumulated a small sunt, which j she naturally wishes to use in accumulating more. The amount she has saved is not large enough for her to invest in ! real estato or in any large enterprise. About two years ago this same qnes- i I tion was mked, and we put the problem before the leading business men and financiers. They answered the question almost unanimously. They advocated the saving of the money in savings banks at a small rate of interest until such time a- thire should be sufficient | money to invest in a good tirst niort- ' gage or in desirable real estate. The reason for this delusion was that women are seldom fitted by education and training to take part wisely in ventures. They are likely to be the prey of design1 ing speculators. They are almost invariably incapable of taking care of them- ^ selves properly in any sort of speculative scheme. The savings banks offer a : secure place for depositing money, and I the income from them, while small, is

profits and p/cater risks.
When tin small sum has grown to be a considerable one, “first” mortgages ou good property form au admirable investment for women’s savings. They yield au income t f about 0 per cent in most states and n re about as safe as saving banks. Laud has au agreeable quality of remaining where it is, and improvements on laud when moitgaged are always insured, so that there is little danger of loss to the holder of a first mortgage. By a first mortgage is meant tho ouowhich, in case of failure of the owner of the property to pay the interest or the amount of the loan in due time,
will bo paid first.
Investment in real estate is not so satisfactory. Property in places where the value of land is not liable to he diminished c,..-t4 a good deal, in tho first place. Then there are taxes, insurance and constant repairs to decrease tho profits. Still land has an advantage of other investments in its comparative stability.—St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

In a ticligbtinlly ingenuous manner lie made himself the butt in each story, and convulsed his audit,,i ; with laughter. Speculative building is becoming quite some years ago, in tho days when Di.
Holmes went to dinners. Seated next to her was a homely, little old gentleman whoso name she ditl not catch. He began to talk with her and asked her how she passed her lime in the country. “Oil, weread, my father and 11” she
said.
“And what do you read?” asked the little man “Well, the ‘Autocrat of tho Breakfast Table’ for one thing, ” she answer-
ed.
“I should think you would not care to read that more than once,” remarked the little old man with a sign of disappointment in his tones. “My father and 1 may not be judges of literature, ” said Miss Virginia airily and with a taint accent of scorn, “but when we get to the end of the ‘Autocrat’ wo generally turn back to the beginning and read it over again.” Tho little old man smiled at this and was disposed to be friendly, but Miss Virginia was so displeased with his tone concerning the “Autocrat” that she met him with chilly indifference. - As soon as the guests went into tho drawing mom her hostess whispered reproachfully to her: “You didn’t seem to find Dr. Holmes as interesting as I hoped.” “Dr. Holmes!” shrieked Miss Virginia. There were a tableau and an explanation. Another story of Holmes’ wit is told. One day old Dr. Peabody was to meet him at a certain place. Tho venerable professor rode in a carriage. When he got there, he was met by Holmes, vho had walked. Near by was a statue of Eurydice. And Holmes said: “Ah, you ride, I seel” “Capital, capital!” cried Peabodw That night he w ent back homo and said to his wife: “Holmes got off a good joke today.” His wife asked him what it was. Tho process by which nature forms Iter silver mines is very interesting. It must be remembered that the earth’s ernst is full of water, which percolates everywhere through tho rocks, making solutions of elements obtained from them. These chemical solutions take up small particles of the precious metal, which they find here and them Sometimes tho solutions in question are hot, tho water having got so far down ns to bo set boiling by the internal beat of tho globe. Then they rush upward, picking up tho bits of metal as thoy go. Naturally heat assists tho performance
of this operation.
Now and then the streams thus formed, perpetually flowing hither and thither bt low the ground, pass through cracks or cavities in tho rocks, where they deposit their leads of silver. This is kept up f ir a great h ngth of time— perhaps thi u-ands of years—until the
