meeting and that of the democrats when Matson and Williamson spoke | there. The democrat mcet'ng was a failure compared to the crowd Messrs. Lewis and Hanna drew. We have enjoyed a short call from Rev. A. W. Williams, of Chicago, formerly a pastor of the Presbyterian chinch of tins citjJ His many friends were glad to greet him and hear him again in his old puipit yesterday morning after an absence of twenty yea- s. He lias just been called as field secretary to Coates college of Terre Haute to assist in raising a JfoO,00O debt which has been incurred in the erection and equipment of buildings made necessary by the rapid increase in the number of students. The board of aid for colleges of the Presbyterian church has granted a donation of $10 000, conditioned on the raising of the balance of $40,000 by May 1, 1895. Of this amount we understand $28,000 has already been raised, and Mr. Williams is in the feld for the remainder with every assurance that the whole amount will be raised. Coates college now lias property’ worth over $100,000, and with the liquidation of this debt and a change iu the charter which will forever prevent any encuni-
