San Francisco, Sept. 8.—Special agent H. B. Martin, of the United States land office, Washington, lias returned from Death Valley, after four and one-half months' absence. He went there to do some surveying and for information regarding claims of private citizens to a portion of the country. Mr. Martin and his party examined the coun try for sixty or seventy miles to the south of Tide canyon. Sandstorms prevailed almost daily and the heat was intense. Part of the time they could get no water, and they had to bring it a longdistance on pack horses. “Our main stock

Thkke are too many hobbles made on fire alarm and police calls from south Grcencastle. The calling of the entire fire department to the farthest point of the city all on account of a drunken man’s capers is disgusting to the taxpayers. It would be better to lose a few seconds in getting in a police alarm than to send it in hurriedly and get in the wrong signal. Politics come to the front in every meeting now days. Even in c inferences it takes a place.
