Nticceftsful Attempt K. Champer’s Ham.

When an old time fire alarm rang out yesterday afternoon at five o’clock the people around the square liegan yelling “Champer’s barn,” some jocularly, as there had been two alarms from there since a week ago that day. The cry proved true, however, and the third attempt was more successful than the other two. On Monday of last week the first alarm came in, the second one on Friday and the third yesterday. The blaze was an ugl\ one for a few minutes, until the fire Jjoys got there. The entire loft was on tire and the barns adjoining were in great danger, lint the tiremen easily held the fire in the Champer barn. The damage is considerable. The fire was, of course, of incendiary origin. Three attempts in one week demonstrate that theory beyond a doubt. The property is on the corner of Market and Franklin streets and is owned by Dr. Siddons, of Knightsville, on whom the loss, with the exception of some articles Mr. Champer had there, will fall. The fire-bug that did the work is persistent to say the least, and open daylight seems to be bis hobby.

Appenilleitis Starters. An operation for appendicitis upon a patient revealed the fact that the disorder was due to the presence of tooth luusli liristles. “Cheap tooth brushes,” remarked the physician who had charge of the case, “are responsible for many obscure throat, stomach and intes tinal ailments. The bristles are only glued on, and come off by the half dozen when wet and brought in contact with the teeth.”

What lias become of our township committeeman? Now is our opportunity. Let us go to work in earnest in the cause of republicanism and good government. The financial problem and the bard times has worried some of our bo-t men. K. G. llorr says that if is a problem to be solved only by experience. Rut now eomes a young man of Floyd, than whom no greater lias lived in this, the nineteenth, century, and solves the financial problem. This problem has confounded the most learned statesmen of the age. Our national legislators have been in continuous session for the last twelve months and a satisfactory solution lias not yet been reached. But this young Rotbehild in finance, removed but little more than a decade from bis baby clothes, declares that our nation’s monetary depression is caused by the large contributions made to Sunday schools and missions. We attribute this discovery to the fact, as this young financier himself declares, that lie no longer drinks lemonade, but takes bis beer, believing it more healthful. No doubt tbi- financial solon feels the need of a stimulant after giving birth to the solution of so great a problem. “Upon what meat does this our modern Caesar feed?” that be should try to corrupt boys younger than himself. We understand that be assumes the roll of a special correspondent of the S.-P. Look out for a financial rev-

olution.

BKICK CHAPEL. A number of our young people went to Fincastle Sunday to the Baptist As-

sociation.

Mrs. Col. Pierce is quite sick again. John Cooper and wife and Mrs. Ed, Lloyd, who have been here several weeks visiting, returned to their Kansas homes last week. Prof. John Hillis sang at the M. K. church Sunday. Rev. Himkell'i Funeral. The funeral of Rev. O. C. Haskell occurred this morning at College Avenue church, a large num her of people attending. The services at the church were solemn, beautiful and impressive, a number of ministers taking part. Presiding Elder Wood officiated, and lie was assisted by Dr. S. H. Town, who read the obituary sketch; Rev. G. W. Switzer and Dr. DeMotte read scripture lessons. Tributes to their departed brother were offered by Dr. Town, Dr. Wood, Dr. Hickman and Dr, Gobin. Beautiful music was rendered by a quartette composed of Misses Nellie Matson and Helen Birch and Messrs. John Hillis and Sherman Powell. Mr. Hillis also sang a solo, Mrs. Hays presiding at the organ. The active pall bearers were: Dr. John, Dr. Poucher, Dr. Gobin, Dr. Town. Dr. Curtiss and Dr. DeMotte. The honorary pallbearers being Dr. Hickman, of Terre Haute; Rev. G. W. Switzer, Brazil; Rev. R. R. Bryan, Rev. Dr. Hester, Rev. E. S. Shumaker, Rev. E. F. Albertson, Elder A. H. Morris, Rev. Dr. Jenkins, Key. Boaz and Rev. Phillips.
