In the skinning match at Wash ington, which is exclusively democratic, Hill skinned Gorman yesterday. Voorhees is too sick to skin or is playing ’possum. This grand old democratic party seems to be wobbling about between the president, the devil and the deep blue sea, like a girl in a briar patch in blackberry time. The house and the senate are at irro conciliable loggerheads, and each G swearing that it will die in the last ditch. The president has jumped into the controversy and done so in exceptionally dramatic style, even for him. He stands by the house and tells the* truth about the senate, which is no more the senate of forty years ago than a water dog is u brook trout.—('tuiricr ./onniol.
Tiik report of the superintendent of fire alarm system in this city shows that the total loss by fire in Greencastle during the* past year to have been but .ffitilS.IJS, of which 412793.05 was paid back in insurance, making a net loss of but $H25 to the* tax payers. This is indeed a wonderful showing, and one that will stand a test, we are confident, with that of any other city in the state. That the alarm system has been the cause of this low percentage of loss there is no doubt, but to make it even more efficient an additional box or two should be erected. The lire at the Episcopal church demonstrated that fact, as
