Prof. H. B. Longden is at borne from Greenwood. James Lewis, of Bloomington, 111., is in the city. Miss Lillian Southard is at home from Bloomington. Lee Mathias went to Vincennes this morning on business. Dwight Alice is visiting his grandfather at Knightsville. D. L. Southard returned to his home at Martinsyille at noon. The Big Four stone gang are off duty on account of the strike. Mr. and Mrs. Will Latta will spend Sunday with home folks. McGinnis and Grooms will run their toot race. No foolishness. Miss Anna Gordon, of Bainbridge, is visiting friends in the

Rev. Charles Crooke attended the Dye-Owen wedding in Bedford July 5. Street Commissioner Cutler reports no strike in the city force up to date. W. S. Blatchley, republican candidate for state geologist, is in the city today. Mrs. R. A. Ogg’s Sunday school class picnicked at McLean's springs yesterday. Dr. E. Hawkins is polishing his sword today in anticipation of another campaign. Prof, and Mrs. Ogg will move into their new house on Locust street next week. Dr. T. Hunt was called to Hadley yesterday in consultation with Dr. Farrabee. of Danville. Miss Pearl Bird and Miss Clara Payne, of Koachdale, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter. Mrs. James Taylor’s sister, Mrs Pamelia Cunningham, returned to her home in Pittsburg, Kas., yesterday. Dr. Hawkins is making an analysis of the water of the public spring. He has often been asked as to its purity and will make a
test.

It was rumored about the Vandalia depot at noon today that freight cars were burning at Ben Davis which necessitated the holding of the noon passenger train at Indianapolis. Inquiry at the depot by the reporter could gain no verification or denial of the rumor. It was learned later that some dat cars were burned at Ben Davis. Miss Allie Friend, of Greencastle, has accepted a position as ate nographer and typewriter in the C. R. Worrall ottice. Her home is in Greencastle and she is to be here Monday. Mr. Worrall is the secretary of both the Big Bloomington fair and also the Big Six fair circuit, and is compelled to have a good stenographer to assist in preparing the advertising matter that will he necessary.— Bloomington

One thing was plainly shown on the Fourth, and that is the people like to attend patriotic meetings and listen to patriotic speeches. There has been too much of an effort to belittle such meetings of late years. The Fourth of July speech has been made the butt of jokes which were decidedly in poor taste. Such addresses are appreciated by the people, and everybody can find time from the other features of the celebration to listen to them, and to take part in the exercises of which they are a part. The many friends of Fred E. Bruner will be pained to learn of his death which occured at Temple, Texas July '2. Mr. Bruner was a former resident of Greencastle and for several years a student of He

At that hour a message was received at Ohiet Brennan’s office that the mob was moving down the Grand Trunk tracks toward the company’s shops at the Fan Handle crossing at 4'Jth street. The rioters have attacked the round house of the Chicago A Eastern Illinois R. R. Co., resulting in the destruction
of many engines.
When business men arrived down town this morning they were treat ed to a strange sight. A long line of white military tents were stretched over the grassy plat on Clark street near the federal building. For the first time in memory of most men the armed forces of Uncle Sam were in camp there to prevent any onslaught on the suittreasury, where over fifteen million dollars are stored. Sentries march back and forth with bayonets glist ening in the sun guarding the treasure. This is because a rumor was abroad last night that an attempt would be made to loot the
suit treasury.
Company G and fifty men under command of (’apt. Cornish are ordered to guard the building. The Chicago Huzzars offered their service to the county sheriff’ for duty in the present riot. The}’ are able to put in tlie field at one hour’s notice sixty mounted men. The sheriff accepted the offer of the organization, which aie independent troops not connected in any way
with the national guard.
