For Congress—Fifth District JESSE OVERSTREET Thkki: was a general break for dictionaries this morning upon the appearance of the Star- I’rex*. One of the sub editors trotted out the word “spissitude,” and said that a Bannkh Timks argument was devoid of that article. Spissitude means “thickness of soft substance,” and as last week’s answer of the Banner Times consisted of cold, hard facts, the sub editor o? the organ again agrees with us, as we assure him we put iu no “spissitude” nor any kind of “thickness of soft substances.” We deal in something more substantial, and the Star-I're.xx is right in saying so. Three or four sub-editors and a boy or two are rattling around in the N£ar-/Ve*s office this week trying to make tariff arguments. They should not overdo the thing this warm weather, but rather should wait until the editorgets back from the sea coast, where he is drinking in ozone and salt water, rejuvenating and getting inspiration for the coming campaign. The combined sub-crcwd, at the risk of getting sun struck, took a shot or two at the Banner Times this week and agreed with it on the most essential part of the argument, namely, that the consumer pays the tax on sugar. That’s our idea, boys, and that’s the reason Mr. McKinley placed it on the free list. We don’t make it in this country, you know. Go in. lads, with more editorials next week, for they a new feature on the

Strikers absolutely refuse to let any trains pass Blue Island. The railway officials have appealed to sheriffs for protection. Engineers and firemen on the Illinois Central quit and the suburban service is completely tied up. Employes of the Ft. Wayne road began quitting work at suburban districts today. The Lake Shore switchmen all threaten to strike owing to complications with Rock Island road. Both roads are using the same tracks. One thousand men have been imported into this city to take the strikers’ places. Six trains were held up at Hammond, Ind., this morning, and the sheriff demands troops. They will likely be called out.
