It is strongly probable that Mr. Smiley’s great love for the general is inspired by hate for Mr. Ader. It will be remembered that not many years ago Mr. Ader stepped in and took away Mr. Smiley’s job as legal adviser to the county. Mr. Smiley has never recovered from this stroke and thus exposes another two edged knife in the local democratic camp. The Went tier. Bloomington Courier. “Reddy” Austin, the confidence man who was captured at Pittsburg, 111., last week, was a genius in his way. That he knows his business thoroughly there is no question. He lias what might be termed a private secretary or confidential man who goes ahead of him and informs him just bow the laud lays. The man who lie has bad for that purpose is an artist (sketch artist) in his way, for he prepares oi' paves the way to success for his chief. Upon him does the responsibility rest, whether Austin will be successful or not in plucking his bird after once caught. As a sample of how he arranges matters for ‘ Reddy,” the Conner will give the contents verbatim of a letter found on Austin when arrested last week that shows how close one of Putnam county's farmers came being the prey of these money vultures. The letter was accompanied by a diagram of the surrounding country and it was plainly seen that Samuel Gardner, a wealthy farmer living about six miles northwest of Greencastle, was the would be victim: Commercial Hotel, Centrally Located. B. M. Hopkins, Leading Hotel in City. Prop. Gkeencastle, Ind., 189-. Greencastle, Indiana. Samuel Gardner. 71J years. Medium size. Gray beard. No mustach. Has seven children. Most of them live around near him. 1 lives on the road into town. (See diagram.) He has given his children in land and money about $14,000. He still owns about 340 acres, most of it worth about $25 per acre, but some of it is worth $100 per acre. He has $3,500 out at interest, is all free of debt, attends to his own business. He tells me that if he wanted 3 or 4 thousand dollars he would take his securities and leave them at the bank, and that the hanks have often told him if he needed money lie could come and get it. He lives about 6 miles northwest of Greencastle. Drive out west on west Liberty street and follow main road to the forks in the road, then take right hand road. (See diagram.) This is not a very rich man, but he is by far the best guy I could tind around here. He does not want to sell anything, but that will make no difference, us there is no one around to interfere, so you can play for him anywhere around his place. He is one of the old time guys we used to look for. I have no doubt but what he can get 3or 4 thousand without any trouble. 1 think you can do business with him for that amount. I can’t see any place to get livery outside of Greencastle. lie does business at all the banks.
