most of the voting for the reason that the country people pretty gen erally failed to get in. That is accountable for the fact that Friday was the tirst good day they have had to work and many a good republican followed Ins plow or worked in his cornfield from daylight to dark without thinking of the primary. They will get in all right in the fall shuttle, however. For trustee the light was Between Robert \V. Allen, Robert S. Graham and Virgil Peck. Messrs. Allen and Peck were neck and neck all through the fight and when the final show down was made there was but one vote’s difference in their totals. In the meantime Boh Graham hustled in 213 votes and captured the prize. Messrs. J. E. Newhouse, Jacob Nutt and T. E. Talbott received fifty, forty-four, and twenty votes respectively. For assessor there was another three-cornered struggle in which E. L Foxworthy carried the largest pole. The vote was pretty well divided, however. Cooper got In 20(1 votes and George W. Hinton 11)6 votes, while Mr. Koxworthy was getting his total of 246. The justice and constable races were | not exciting as there was no con test on them. The justices named j were Walter J. Ashton 430, James T. Denny 3l»7, George W. Ruro-
Lnughlin, George Hathaway, Albert Lockridge and Miss Elizabeth Ames. The parlor was beautifully

advance to Lookout Valley, menace Gen. Bragg’s flank, and protect the passage of supplies un the Ten nessee to within a short distance from the famishing armies. This was promptly done. Hooker’s main force took post at Wauhatcbie, where he was attacked before daylight on the morning of the 29th of October. After a battle of three hours in the darkness, the confederates were beaten and driven away. During this struggle an amusing incident occurred. When the battle began about two hundred mules, frightened by the noise, broke from their tethers and dashed into the ranks of Wade Hampton’s legion, and produced a great panic. The confederates supposed it to he a charge of Hooker's cavalry and fell back in great confusion. The incident was a theme for a mock heroic poem in imitation of Tennyson's “Charge of the Six Hundred,”
