Those who delight in antebreakfast walks orgynmas- : tics are warned, too, that “early morui iug exercise” is as much to be avoided as j early mental labor, because at that time I vitality is at its lowest ebb and needs | stimulation rather than further taxing. None but the gent It's t exercise should be taken until the exhausted system has been supplied with abundant nourishment. In the early afternoon, especially if a noonday dinner be? taken, the results of mental labor are not, as a rule, satisfactory, because digestion and sound thought cannot proceed together. This fact is a well recognized one by all brain workers, and there are some enthnsiasts who think it the height of cruelty to pupils and teachers alike that school should l>e in session in the afternoon. From nithu until after 8 o’clock there is a perceptible disinclination to work. ! The comparative absence of electricity | from the atmosphere makes the head j heavy and induces drowsiness. Thu same condition prevails again between 9 or 10 I o’clock at night and sunrise. There is j little question of the fact that atmospheric electricity affects the quality of mental labor. When it is in excess, from 9 o’clock in the morning until noon, the best work is done, all other conditions 1 icing favorable. Again, from about <5 o’clock in the evening it rises and is maintained for some three hours. In regard to season, there is less atmospheric ! electricity at midsummer than at midi winter.

An Optical Illusion.
If you want i\ good onding to a little party, take all the guests into the dining room and turn out the gas. Make them all sit around the table, in the middle of which place a soup plate. In the soup plate put some common salt and a little alcohol. Light the alcohol, and then look at each other’s faces. They will look natural at first, but as the alcohol burns out and the salt becomes ignited the flame changes from yellow to blue, and the changes in tho faces are very startling. They all take on a ghastly look. Eyes stick out, and the skin looks as though drawn tight like parchment. Then tho faces become almost black, and when the flame dies out and you go out into a lighted room you unconsciously try to wipe the black off. But it doesn’t come. It's all the light tr 1 ’iu tho salt. — H.irtl'crd Post.
