Republicans are feeling sore over the unfavorable mention their work of yesterday received in the Jour-

nal this morning.

Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Abrams entertained a number of their friends last night at their residence on Bloomington street. Those attending were Messrs, and Mesdames John Cooper, Chas. Cooper, L. L. Louis, J. T. Stewart, Dave Abrams, L. Handel, S. A. Leverton, Will Welch and Miss Lou Steele. A good sized audience witnessed the cantata Esther, by Greencastle talent, at the opera house last evening, and were well pleased with its rendition. Some sixty people took part in the performance, all of whom deserved and were accorded just praise. Miss Eads, the queen, afflicted with sore throat, had the sympathy of the audience in her plucky determination to render her part. Miss Matson was a splendid Zerish. In fact, the company as a whole is a talented one, of which our neighboring city may be justly proud.—Brazil Democrat.

James Leslie a tailor of this city presented himself at the first ward polls yesterday and was challenged by the republican challenger, who had information that Leslie was not an American citizen. Leslie was polled by both democrats and republicans under the name of Leslie and presented that name when he attempted to vote. This was at nine o’clock and he left saying he would produce his naturalization papers in a few moments. His moments lengthened into hours, but he returned in the afternoon with some naturalization papers which gave the name of James L. Killepp. Leslie, as lie is commonly known, is the name he has on his sign, the name he answers to and the name under which he first tried to vote, but on his second attempt he changed the matter and swore he was Killepp. The following is an extract from the oath Leslie swore

Sam Pitts became so provoked at Charles Grimes that he slapped Charles ami shoved him down and then choked him quite severely. Esq. Forgey fined Pitts $:s.0n for assault and battery and Grimes $2.50 for provoke. Our town election will take place next Monday, when four cane’dates will be defeated. There is no politics in the election. There are three candidates spoken of for township trustee, .las. C. Fordice, Charles Spencer and Taylor Carrington, all first-class men, and there are three for assessor, James S. Daniel, Frank Hamilton and Geo. W. Gardner, all good men. Repuhl cans will have a good township ticket, and every one is well pleased with the county and state tickets. Many democrats say that they intend to vote the republican ticket this year. Dr. G. W. Poole’s otlice is nearing completion.

FILI.MOKK. Ofho Bridges, wife and one child went to Tuscola, Illinois, last week on a short visit. Alvorn Wright, student of the medical department of the Northwestern universitv, Chicago, 111., returned home last week after several months’ absence. Frank Leslie was at Indianapolis last Friday, and while there called to see W. \V. Day. He reports him doing well. Mrs. Eliza Wright is slowly recovering from the injury she received by the fall into tlie cellar at Greencastle recently. On Sunday morning, May 13, Dr. Walker, for several years missionary to China, will preach at the M. K. church here, and in the afternoon at Liberty churt h. Next Sunday is the regular preaching day at the Christian church, and “rumor’’ says there is to be a wedding at the church then. Last Sunday morning Rev. Wm. Pack preached the funeral of Clara Wright at the Methodist church to a full and attentive house. It was an excellent funeral discourse. Howard Lisby has purchased the vacant lot where Gorham’s house burned, and will build a residence. There will he more fruit than was expected. Some varieties of apples are full of bloom.

The order issued by the postofliee department that a letter must not be forwarded through the mails if the stamp has lost the least bit of a corner, or is ever so slightly mu tilated, is provocative of sharp criticism. is James L. Killepp.”

The above transaction shows to what extent the democrats of the first ward went yesterday in effort to got votes, and still the republican majority was increased 117. It is safe to say that there is no one in the city who knew James L. Killepp until after those naturalization papers were produced. The part of the affidavit above set in italics presents a good opportunity for investigation.
