For Mayor JONATHAN’ BIRCH For Treasurer JOHN GILMORE For Clerk JAMES M. HURLEY For Marshal WILLIAM E. STARR For Councilineii First Ward—THOMAS ABHAMS .Second Ward—EDMUN 0 PERKIN’S third Ward—JOHN K. MILLER Among other evils of this year it is said this is the “seventeen year locust" season. If there is anything else democracy wants to inflict send it along. In the election returns from Albany, N. Y., yesterday, a republican mayor is elected by 3424 majority, the first time a republican has held that office for fifteen years. In New Jersey many cities went republican for tlie Erst time in their existence. The Indiana cities will speak on May 1. and then will be results that will surprise the enemy. Greencastle will roll up about 300 majority. The following concerning the candidacy of Col. J. H. Jordan for tlie nomination of judge of the supreme court is from the Newcastle Courier: The name of Judge J. H. Jordan, of Martinsville, will Is. presented to the republican state convention for nomination as a candidate for judge from the first supreme court judicial ui- trict. It is generally accepted as due to the dignity of the judicial ermine that the office should seek the man. in the sense that a person willing or deserving to receive the nomination is not expected to get out and “hustle” for it after the manner of candidates for offices of a diflerent nature. This rule is, we believe, being generally observed by the gentlemen named as candidates for judges of tlie supreme court. But there is no rule against their friends speaking good words for them. Of Judge Jordan it can be said that he is eminently fitted tor the place. As a lawyer and judge ho ranks high in the estimation of the liar of the state, and bis nomination would give great satisfaction to those having business in the court of last resort.

The Banner Times has freely given it’s space to the views of republicans ami friends of candidates from all parts of the county on political matters just preceding the county convention. We do this gladly, ns we believe all such views should be expressed fully and satisfactorily before the nominating struggle on Saturday*. After that there w ill be noexpressions of opin iou except that the ticket is of the best. There's harmony* in the air and the opinion is held by each candidate that if he is not tlie one to make the best race lie will get out of the way for his opponent. This feeling is right, and shows that the party is in dead earnest in it’s intentions this y ear. We have been impartial in the matter and have refused none. The various candidates should hem in mind that this paper is not espousing the cause of any particular one for the different positions to be filled. When an announcement is handed in it is followed by some editorial remarks of a general nature, but we do not think it proper for the recognised organ of the republican party to take sides in the contest between the aspirants for official
position, and all of whom are and I Mr. Heath is one of the best known have been friends of the paper. Jjournalists in the country.
preliminary remarks,
dash out of the box was mayor, and it was here that Mr. Thud got in his work. The nomination refused to come, and Mr. Thud stood out in a dull, sickening attitude as glaringly as does an asthmatic cough in a Danville drug store. The spell was finally broken and Mr. Thud quieted by Chairman Adei placing in nomination L. L. Louis. He was acclaimed. C. L. Martin wove a string of eloquence about A. F. Jacobs and spun him on the convention fioor. Mr. Jacobs caught I on as clerk. The great fight in the first ward between Ed. Walls and Al. Phillips for political honors was settled satisfactorily. Mr. Walls was named for treasurer, by acclamation. For marshal, a hurried trip was made to south Greeneastle, and after shaking out the bushes, one Sel. Brazier was named, by acclamation. No one in the house could give Mr. Brazier's full name, but it is rumored a Pinkerton man will be imported to ferret out just
who this candidate is.
At this point the meeting did the almost impossible feat of breaking into fragments. It was so small at the start that no one thought of such a move, but it was done, and the wards separated for councilmanic action. The first rattled around in the jury box and nominated Al. Phillips for councilman; the second ward got lost under Clerk Cullen’s desk and quickly coughed up James L. Browning as their i\oice. Tammany hall and three or four others got on the coal box in the west side of tlie room and “seven elevened” out John L. Cooper. All this time Mr. Thud was making a great deal of noise, and the party finally dissembled to get rid of him. He's a prominent man in democratic conventions this
year.

the cure of diphtheria is now an assured fact, and this should be remembered by all readers. In the report of a case where the child was given up by the doctor, a friend coming in named the fact that he had known children relieved by the pineapple. The physician in attendance said, “Get it and try it; it can do no harm.” A ripe pineapple was gotten, and the juice expressed, and given in teaspoonful doses slowly. It seemed to clear the throat, swallowing was easier, and in a few hours the child was
sleeping, and recovered well. The Commercial Gazelle ap

If convenient and agreeable, please insert in this week's paper, a few thoughts about candidates for the different state offices who are seeking nominations. I see Hon. Thos. Hanna is out for attorney general, and I think Putnam county ought to indorse him in the convention the 14th and instruct her delegates to cast Putnam’s vote for him in the state convention.
