Oast an eye or two over on the Buckeye state today. They had republican elections there yesterday. As a ‘’feeler" on the evening of the republican convention for the republican boys we will print in our Friday edition the full speech of Hon. \Vm. McKinley at Minneapolis. It is well worth preserving. Many cities in Ohio went repub lican yesterday for the first time in their existence. The vote was for unimportant offices in most instances, but it bears out the system that republicans are voting early and often in 1894. The election returns of yesterday from Oiiio, Michigan, Minnesota, Connecticut and Iowa cities show immense republican gains, and hear out the well-established rule of this year that every election has demonstrated—that this is the year to redeem the country from democracy’s deadly clutch. The republicans expected just such victories and the self-satisfied smiles on their laces show that they are not disappointed. Thus it will be seen throughout the year, as the people speak in each succeeding election that republican principles shall triumph. “Olil Seltlem* Piculo.** An Old Settlers’ Picnic will be held at Kerr's gallery, in the old Spurgin room, Wednesday evening, April 4, 1894. The attractions will be many and varied and the affair Yvill be an exact counterpart of one of the annual festivals on the green. A baby show will be one of the attractions of the program and the best looking baby will receive a handsome prize. Bring on your babies and compete for the prize. 10c admittance to all and any part of the ground. Old Farmer Stubbins, Jonathan Hay seed and Sallie Magrundy will he there to give their ages and tell old time stories. Oates opened at 7 :30. Tbe Yo'fIvldua! Irrigation Pump Plan* Operated by Some Hanna* Farmers. When windmills were first suggested for litigation purposes, men laughed | at the idea and looked upon it as a vi- | sionarv scheme. Now, does the individual irrigation pumping plant pay? In ! the last four years a number of small pumping plants have been installed In | the vicinity of Garden City, Kan., and farther up and dotvu the Arkansas val- ^ ley. Each plant consists of a pump operated by wind power, and in most cases a small reservoir made by scraping out the soil to a depth of a few inches ; and making banks of it two feet or more 1 in height, so as to form a basin three or
four feet deep.
The pioneer in this line of irrigation in the vicinity of Garden City has a five inch Gause pump, supplemented by an ordinary 4 inch cylinder, the whole | run by a 10 foot windmill, giving a pumping capacity of 65 gallons a min- i ute. His mill and pump cost $182; his ! reservoir, $16; total. $148. Hebasused ! his plant four years, irrigating four acres each season for the first three and nine acres last season. He could irrigate 20 acres if he had the land and lias made from $100 to $175 an acre each season 1 off bis land, growing garden stuff and ' small fruits, and has a fine lot of fish in his reservoir, which will add consider- i able to his profit eventually. The fore- , going is only one of many similar plants by which water ia lifted 13 to 15 feet ; and scattered about the valley. Sum- | marizing results as far as obtained, the Colorado Field and Farm says: It appears that the average gross return of fruits and vegetables has been $100 an acre annually, and the average quantity of land that may be bandied by the ordinary family under this sys- | tern may be estimated at 10 acres. A good crop of fruit at average prices will, of course, yield much more than tbe amount named, and so will small fruits and vegetables under favorable clrcum .tances. While some men will
