The contest between the Madison hand ot Brazil and the Silver Leaf band of Greencastle will occur in the opera house in this city on the night of Friday. March 30. The boys here are making arrangements for a grand time and will guarantee good order and splendid entertain ment. Four pieces will he played on the contest, but a grand musical program will be given during the

A reporter in running through papers in the county clerk’s office was recently very much amused at the “returns” that.are made by per sons officiating in wedding ceremonies. In the slip which the minister or justice returns to the office arc lines for age, color, etc. In the color line are to be found the queerest expressions. One minis ter states the groom was light complected : another fills in the remark that the bride was yellow and the groom black ; and one states the itride was darkey and the groom darke. Thus the list runs, and a look over the package shows many funny expressions. “Col. C. C. Matson is in town today,” said the Martinsville lit porter on Saturday, “and his presence has renewed the inquiry concerning the probability of his candidacy for the democratic nomination for congressman against Congressman Cooper. Democratic opinion seems to be divided concerning this probability. While some say that Col. Matson is for Cooper, others say that he is in that attitude but will allow himself to fall into the hands of friends on convention day and will allow his name to be thrown into the convention as an anti-Cooper rallying cry and that Cooper’s enemies are making a judicious wait for that occasion. Such is the diversity of democratic
opinion.”
The cantata. “Queen Esther,” was given last night before another large audience, the favorites of the previous evening bringing forth great applause. The cantata was executed under a great disadvant age. as the “queen,” Miss Fads, had a severe sore throat and it was with great effort that she played her part. The program was the same as on tlie first evening, every one playing their part perfectly, making the entertainment anoth musical and social pleasure to the many people who haye seen it played here. The managers and participants feel jubilant over the successful outcome cf the venture, as their patronage has been all that could be desired.
NRWS FROM DEPAUW.
The N«wh Daily from Greencafttfe's Great Center of Learning. Dr. Bassett led college chapel yesterday. Field day exercises will probably occur on Monday, May 14. Mr. Duvall, of Indianapolis, was the guest of his brother, Dr. Duvall, yesterday. Albert Smith and W. Williams have been promoted to first sergeants in the military department. Ed. Patterson has been promoted to the position of sergeant major. The Young Men’s Christian association elected the following officers at their meeting last night: Verling Helm, pres; John Lallines. vice pres; Harry Ward, rec. sec; Ed. Davis, treas. Thf Allen ttiakt. The interest in the Allen case continues unabated, and those liking disgusting morsels of evidence such as are dropped in the case are apparently enjoying the affair, which to the principals is certainly serious enough. The friends of each side have shown much feeling in the matter and given evidence ot their tension as the facts are brought out. Some of the listeners got too gay yesterday as the plaintiff testified and were promptly and properly called down by his honor. The girl’s testimony is shaky on some points as to dates, etc., due presumably to her faulty memory. The evidence in the case closed at noon, the prosecution having put Trustee Jones on the stand. The defense did not offer any evidence, and Mayor Case thereupon bound Allen over to Putnam circuit court to await a trial. Bail was turnished at $500 and Allen was re-
leased.
