In some stores the salesmen are ladies and let yon take away a shoe that fits indifferently, to save themselves the trouble of rumaging through the shelves for the proper thing. Horace Brown of Greene county, C. E. Brown of Paris, 111., and Mrs. M each a in ami daughter of Tipton, are here attending the funeral of their father. Judge F. T. Brown. A fire starting front a hired hand’s pipe destroyed a tine barn on the farm of John Hamilton in Floyd township Wednesday morning. It contained hay, corn, other products, a two year-old ntare and a sow and pigs. There was no in-
surance.
Dr. Smythe has received an invitation to the annual banquet of the alumni of the Long Island Hospital Medical college, Brooklyn, N. Y., at which C hauneey Depew is to he the orator. The doctor thinks he can hardly afford to leave his business and pay railroad fare these democratic times in order to hear
the east wind blow.
A mandolin recital by Mr. Orean Smith in music hall was given to a goodly audience who like the popular flavor of that Italian instrument. He was ably assisted by Miss Mary Hoover, pianct accompanist, and Miss Pauline Blake, vo ealist It was also the occasion of his bringing out three of his pu pils, Messrs. Weese, Howe and

1 ships is hung up it seems. So far
there have been three bids and none of them accepted. There was a great deal of animated swearing indulged in by the lowest bidder yesterday because he did not re ceive the contract and it is said there is to be a bolt of the democratic ticket in consequence. It seems it is impossible for that Greeneastle and Madison bid to get through without some kind of trouble. It was juggled last year
it will be remembered.
Ed. Perkins is a loser by fire. On the old Alison farm, north of the city, which he now owns, an eight-room house burned Tuesday evening. It was a well built structure and could not be replaced for I’iliOO. He had an insurance on the same of $1300; a combination meat, smoke and wood house burned also, on which he had $100 insurance. The total loss is about $2000. The wind was fortunate and a tine, well-stocked barn escaped. The lire caught from a chimney. Milt. Bradshaw had been living on the farm, but a new man moved in Tuesday and built a fire in a fire place that had been in disuse for some time; a hole in the
flue caused the trouble.
R. M. Black spent yesterday at G. M. Rumbarger'sstock farm near Indianapolis and reports the display of horses there the finest he has seen in some time. Mr. Rumbarger has a long list of stallions, at the head of which is Ethan Wilkes, the sire of the rest, among which are Emperor Wilkes, American Lad, Satisfaction. Ethan K., Roy Ethan. Sir Madrid and u gelding, Will Kerr. The last named has a record of 2:07$, made last year at first trial—a remarkable performance. Ethan Wilkes and Ethan K. are especially fine ani mals. Mr. Rumbarger is assisted by Dennis Ball and is making a success of Ins Marion county farm. Last evening about six o’clock occurred the death of Zella Cheek, daughter of Mrs. Mollie Cheek, at the family residence on Locust street. The cause of the death w as

Haute this morning.
O. L. Hubbard is down from
Cirnvel Hoad Hid*. This is the day for bids on repairs of free gravel roads and the city has been full of anxious and hungry bidders. The tush is partially caused by the democratic party, which is preventing many men from earning a living by regular oeeupation and they have taken tip this method as the next best thing. There are with the commissioners several bushels of envelopes containing the figures and the work of opening began this afternoon. The contracts arc to be let by sections of each road and the bids will be extremely low; some say down to $1.75 or less for a team for a day, and labor will run as low as 80 cents a day for a shoveler. Thus do these democratic times give labor a blow in the neck here in
Putnam.
In a talk witli a prominent con tractor he said many of the lowest bids would not be responsible, as former experience bad proved that some men did not intend to put in a full day or an honest day when they made the rate so low. The figures will not be .known until to-
morrow.
Mrs.J. B. DeMotte left this atternoon for Toledo, O., where she goes to meet her husband, who is now
