Washinuton, Jan. ‘J.—The Democratic members of the ways and means committee met at the treasury department at 8 o'clock last night to finally decide upon the income tax question and the internal revenue features of the tariff bill. Mr. Bynum was the only member absent, being indisposed. His absence prevented a vote on the income tax question, and after a session of three hours, at 11 o’clock the committee adjourned until today at 4 o'clock. The discussion was general, covering the entire question as to how the deficit in tho revenues was to be met. The issue between the members is whether the income tax shall be upon individual incomes or simply on incomes from cons'rations. When the committee adjourned 10 days ago the general understanding was that the members were

Washinoton, Jan. 2.—It is not probable that the senate finance committee will have any financial measure to submit to the senate until after the tariff bill has been disposed of. Such is the opinion of Senator Voorhees, chairman of the committee. He believes that the tariff’ measure will lx- passed by the house quickly, and that it may come over to the senate after two weeks' debate. He talked as though it was his intention to press its consideration in his committee as rapidly as possible, and he feels confident that the Republican members will assist him in this endeavor, from the assurances they have given. Mr. Voorhees therefore hopes that it will not be long after congress gets to work again before the Wilson

bill liecomes a law.

The first blow was struck today when they applied to the supreme court for an injunction preventing J. W. Freeborn from attempting to take Mrs. Lease’s place on the board. Mrs. Lease has gone to Olathe to attend the meeting of the board. This meeting was to have been held at Winfield, but the place was changed by her order. The matter was afterward brought to the attention of Governor Leweuing, who immediately telegraphed the members that Mrs. Lease was no longer connected with the board and instructed them to pay no attention to Iter orders.
