THE ORIGIN OF ANTHRACITE. A. Possible Solution of Ono of tlie Mysteries of Science. The main differ nee between anthracite and bituminous coal is that the former is devoid of volatile matter. Heretofore the theoiy generally accepted to account for this difference was that presented half a century ago by Professor Rodgers while conducting the first geoligical survey of Pennsylvania.
