LIVE TOPICS ABOUT TOWN. V Itateli of Items Gathered into Notes in a Day’ll Journey. Captain Smiley was the victim on yesterday of a hit of childish simplicity that brought forth a hearty smile from his brother attorneys in court. Little Mary, the bright four-yenr-old daughter of P. O. Colliver, accompanied her father to court yesterday morning, and as she is a general favorite with the legal brethren, she was given a great deal of attention. One of the young attorneys was amusing her with tales of the approaching holiday season, and his description of Santa Claus was quite vivid. He pictured the good old saint as having, along with his other peculiarities of dress, a long flowing heard. To illustrate his description he pointed out Captain Smiley’s well brushed whiskers, and remarked that perhaps the captain was Santa’s brother. Miss Colliver’s curiosity was at fever heat, and after waiting as long as she could, she finally slipped over to the captain and shocked hint out of his reverie with the pretty and childish question of “Are you Santa Claus’ brother?” The question was audible and the entire court went into a roar at the captain's dilemma.

***

The Santa Claus question is a real live issue, and it seems the youngsters are opening up early. The following letter addressed to the old fellow found its way to our sanctum this morning: Gkkincasti.e, Dec. 5. IS'.'il. I)t: \it Santa Claes: Please

and some pants and gun. 1 am the years old last November. O yes, please bring me a brouny. I have short curls now and have <>n pants. I am a good little boy and mind my papa and mamma. Please

don't forget me.

Yours little hoy We reserve the signature, hut will state that the first initial of the name is Paul. We will turn the letter over to the proper “Santa’’ in due time, however, so

the owner of the above five-year-old item composer may begin saving up. * * * Grant Newton, colored, is pow’ful fond ot a growler. Grant has the art of “rushing the bucket” down to a system, and he has had enough trials and vicissitudes in running the gauntlet of the bums and red noses in the growler avenues of the city to ordinarily have more sense than loosen his grip on a growler, especially when he has the same filled with the foamy fluid. Grant lost his head one night t his week. He had the can. and spent his last dime for beer and was sliding over the icy pavements with his precious | load. He was destined to heart-! breaking disappointment, however. I A dog light struck up about mid-! way on the “Midway,” ami Grant, | forgetting his mission in the grand opportunity to see a dog tight, set his can on the ground and began “pulling” for'the under dog, all the time keeping up a chorus of yells like a Dahomeyan danser. Some one swiped his growler during the I general melee and then there was war. Grant was led a swift chase for several blocks, finally rescuing part of his beer. The rest was lost. Giant now solemnly avers that forty dog tights can never again! make him loosen his grip on his i growler. *** There is nothing more cruel! j these slippery days than to drive a i smooth-shod horse along the streets, ! especially in pulling a heavy load. A reporter observed a driver work- ‘ ing for a hall hour yesterday in trying to induce two horses to pull a loadup a bank of ice. The exert- j ion put forth by the animals was pitiful and, though the driver did not whip them, the work of that half hour was greater than a week of steady hauling on solid ground. He tiually gave up the job and went to prevail on the owner of the team ^ to have them shod. This instance | is blit one of munv that have oejeurred this week. Have your horses' rough shod these days or leave i them in their barn.
