San Francisco, Nov. 4.—Shortly be- ! foru 3 o'clock yesterday morning fire j was discovered under the Burlington I house, adjoining the Grand hotel, in the store occupied by Heuter Brothers A: Company, dealers in paints and artists' supplies. The flames spread rapidly throughout the basement of the block bounded by Market, New Montgomery, Stevenson and Second streets, and then spread to the first floor, occupied by the Hall Safe and Lock company: Hill cV Goldman, druggists' supplies: board of trade room-,; rullman Palace Car company's ottice; Great Northern railroad lic.iet oitice. and the rooms of tlie Syndicate Investment coinpa:iy. The smoke in the meantime had arouse 1 the inmates of th - Grand and th • Burlington h dels, and the frightened guests rushed to the sidewalk with what valuables they could carry. The] tire soon shot up through the freight elevator in the rear of the Grand hotel. 1 and a disastrous conflagration was looked for. The general alarm brought | the remainder of the lire department to | the scene. The front of Hueter | Brothers & ( ompnny’s store blew ont with a loud exjilosiou and a large volume of smoke poured out, almost overcoming the firemen. Jacob Underhill, a wifio merchant, was overcome by the smoke in the Grand hotel and was carried out unconscious. Cashier Weeks, of the Gcand. who is crippled, was almost overcome when he \ as assisted out by the elevator boy. There were sevei al other narrow escapes. By o'clock the fire had spread along tbo eastern end of the block. The efforts of the tiremen to coniine the lire within the block occupied by the Burlington and Grand hotels were Anally successful. PEKRI’, S. Dak.. Nov. 4.—A big band of Sioux Indians are camning oil Bad river about three miles trom here and are preparing for a big Indian dance and pow wow. An emissary from Standing Rock is among them, having called them together for the purpose of instructing them oa the coming of their new Messiah. The Indians are very much excited and expect in a few days that a huge wave of earth thirty feet deep is to ] a-s over the country, which will smother all bad Indians and whites. Gi.nucESTEit, Mass, Nov. 4.—The annual report of the loss of vessels from this port for the year just published, shows that eighteen vessels have been lost on which there was an insurance of *97,528. The number ot lives lost is eighty-six. During the previous year tlure were fourteen vessels lost with an insurance of £50,504. The number of lives lost was seventy; 85 per cent, of the men lost were foreigners.
